Red Raider Volleyball Loses Marathon Match to Buffaloes

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech Red Raiders lost a hard fought match to the Colorado Buffaloes tonight at Coronado High School. The Raiders took the Buffs the distance, fighting tooth and nail the whole way. However, Colorado came out with a 3-2 victory in five games, 17-15, 14-16, 15-7, 12-15, 15-13. The loss drops the Red Raiders to 16-13 (5-11) on the year while the Buffs improve to 16-9 (10-6).
"We played hard tonight, but unfortunately we didn't come out on top", Tech coach Jeff Nelson said. "We made some mistakes that ended up costing us against a good team."
A pair of school records were set by the Tech women. Skydra Orzen tallied 91 assists, breaking the previous high of 85 set by Lisa Hilgers in 1996. Colleen Smith notched 34 kills, beating the 32 tallied by Courtney Putnam in 1997.
For the game Tech hit .285 (108-37-249) while Colorado hit .284 (115-42-257). Five Red Raiders ended up with double digit kills . Mellisa McGehee nailed a career high 14 kills and Lori Garber also notched a career high with 25. Garber led the Red Raiders with a .455 hitting percentage while Smith hit .324. Four Red Raiders (Orzen, Ann Romjue, Garber and McGehee) had double-doubles.
Colorado was led by Kelly Campbell. Campbell recorded a triple-double (93 assists, 13 kills and 15 digs).
The Red Raiders return to action Wednesday night against Baylor in the final game at Coronado before the opening of the United Spirit Arena. --TTU--
