DENVER -- Two goals by freshman forward Kerri Weaver (Littleton, Colo. / Columbine HS), along with an amazing goaltending performance by freshman Erica Izard (Fort Collins, Colo. / Poudre HS) led the University of Denver women's soccer team to a 2-0 win over Texas Tech on Sunday afternoon. A season-high crowd of 1,200 came before the game to witness the inaugural concert of the Williams Tower bells at the Ritchie Center, and many stayed to watch the Pioneers come away with the win.
Weaver tallied three goals over the weekend, combined with Denver's 3-2 overtime loss to Baylor on Friday afternoon, and now has seven on the season. Her first score came when Red Raider goaltender Brittney Peese couldn't corral a shot from senior midfielder Andrea Raleigh (Belvidere, Ill. / Belvidere HS). Peese lunged for the rebound, but reached the ball a split second after Weaver drove it into the net with less than four minutes remaining in the first half. Raleigh also assisted on Weaver's second goal that sealed the win for the Pioneers (7-8-1).
Izard posted her sixth shutout of the season by making a season-high 17 saves off of 20 shots from Texas Tech (8-9-1). All of Denver's last six wins have come via shutout.
"It's nice to play well and win," said head coach Jeff Hooker. "Texas Tech played very well in the second half, and their backs were very good. For about 10 minutes, we couldn't stop them. We took a chance and changed things around late. Both teams took risks at the end, and ours paid off. I thought that Kristen Warren did an unbelieveable job in the midfield today, and Erica Izard was outstanding."
