Texas Tech Cross Country to Compete in Texas A&M InvitationalRaiders Fit in Final Meet of Season Before Big 12 ChampionshipsLUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech University cross country teams travel to College Station, Texas this weekend to compete in the Texas A&M Invitational on Saturday. The meet was recently added to the Red Raider schedule to give the runners another opportunity to compete before the 1997 Big 12 Conference Championships. More than 2,000 high school and college cross country runners will commence on the Texas A&M Golf Course Saturday morning. The university women's 5K will begin at 9:50 a.m., followed by the university men's 8K at 10:15 a.m. "We're taking our OEA, teams to A&M this weekend," said head coach Greg Sholars. "It's a nice flat course that should provide a fast race for our runners. It will help us tune up for the Big 12 meet coming up." Texas Tech's top runners will travel, including Leigh Daniel, Kristen Koppes, Evette Turner, and Dawn Charlier on the women,s side. David Leigh, Scott Rackers, and Jason Winkle are among the men slated to compete. In the university divisions, the field features conference opponents Texas A&M and Texas, plus TCU, Rice, Houston, Mississippi State, Southwest Texas, Northeast Louisiana, Stephen F. Austin, Texas-Pan American, Texas-Arlington, Sam Houston State, Texas Southern, North Texas, Prairie View A&M, Texas-San Antonio, McNeese State, Tulsa, Western Kentucky and Arkansas-Little Rock. The course is all grass with rolling hills, helping the Red Raiders prepare for the conference meet. The 1997 Big 12 Championships, hosted by Oklahoma State University, takes place on November 1 in Stillwater, Okla. It will be held at the OSU Cross Country Course, with the women's 5K race beginning at 11 a.m. and the men's 8K following at noon.
