Evette Turner Named Big 12 Runner of the WeekTurner receives women's conference honors after two performances in her Tech careerLUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech cross country newcomer Evette Turner earned Big 12 Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week honors yesterday after her first place finish at Saturday's Red Raider Classic. Turner (Trelawny, Jamaica), a transfer from Barton County Community College in Kansas, completed the 5K course Saturday in 19 minutes, 24.4 seconds. She finished 25 seconds ahead of second place Debbie Arzola from UT-San Antonio, earning her first top finish with the Red Raiders. Evette has jumped onto our team and made herself a front-runner,0/00 said head coach Greg Sholars. She's a hard-worker and has enhanced the team overall. I'm excited about the contributions she's made so far and about those she will make on the indoor and outdoor track teams. The Red Raider Classic was just the second meet Turner competed in with Texas Tech. At the Cowboy Jamboree Oct. 4 in Stillwater, Okla., she placed 14th overall with a time of 18:33, good for third among the Red Raider pack. Turner is one of many runners highlighting the women's team. Along with sophomores Leigh Daniel and Kristen Koppes, the trio will be contending for nationals. The Texas Tech cross country teams travel to Texas A&M this weekend before heading to the 1997 Big 12 Championships. The conference event, hosted by Oklahoma State University, takes place on November 1 in Stillwater, Okla. It will be held at the OSU Cross Country Course, with the women's 5K race beginning at 11 a.m. and the men's 8K following at noon. Colorado junior Adam Goucher took men's Runner of the Week honors.
