Sept. 30, 1997 1997 Red Raider Women's Soccer NotesRed Raiders take a break from Big 12 play The Horned Frogs are 5-5 on the season. TCU returns seven letterwinners and six starters from last season's 7-13 squad. Games between Tech and TCU have often been known for their excitement. The Horned Frogs hold a 2-1-2 series record over Tech. In their last meeting on Oct. 1, 1996, Tech won 5-1 in Lubbock. However, probably the most exciting match up between the former SWC rivals was on Nov. 2, 1995 when the Red Raiders faced TCU in the first and only SWC Soccer Championships. The game is recorded as a 0-0 tie, but Tech advanced to the semifinals of the tournament after winning a second sudden death shoot-out 4-3. Weekend road trip includes Jaguar Invitational It will be the first meeting between Texas Tech and Georgia Southern. The Eagles are 7-1-2 this season. They are led by Sophomore striker Tara Chaisson, who has five goals and five assists for a total of 15 points. Sophomore goalkeeper Mary Perry has 39 saves and only four goals against on the year. Her goals against average is 0.48. South Alabama has a record of 7-1-1 on the season. Freshman forward Hilla Rantala has a team high 26 points. She has put in 10 goals and assisted on six others. Junior midfielder Sabrina Thompson and Rantala lead the Jaguars with six assists. Freshman goalkeeper Bryna Warnock has started in all nine games and has a goals against average of 1.02. She has 44 saves, two shutouts, and nine goals against on the season. In the last meeting between Tech and South Alabama on Oct. 6, 1996, the Red Raiders won 7-2 in Lubbock. Kristy Frantz had a hat trick, while Amy Rutstein added two goals and Amaris Smith and Kristi Patterson had one a piece. Frantz also contributed two assists, while Patterson and Julie Clement added one each. Tech falls to Iowa State, Nebraska Against Iowa State, the Red Raiders scored first as Kristy Frantz hit a shot at the 50-second mark. Amaris Smith added the team's second goal in the 13th minute of play. Iowa State answered in the 37th minute as Liz Salih booted the ball in from close to the sideline. The second half saw the Cyclones get goals from Dawn Weber at 54:18, followed by Lindsey Rector at 68:13 and Brittany Hull at 76:00. Tech had eight shots on goal, to Iowa State's 10. The Red Raiders took five corner kicks and committed seven fouls. The Cyclones took four corner kicks and had 22 fouls. Against #10 Nebraska on Sunday, the Red Raiders were handed their third shutout of the season. The Cornhuskers' Jenny Benson scored 2:29 into the game. Kim Engesser added another goal at the 25:20 mark. In second half play, Lindsay Eddleman scored in the 48th minute, while Kari Uppinghouse and Julie Greco added goals in the 69th and 78th minutes. Tech had no corner kicks, two shots on goal and ten fouls. Nebraska took six corner kicks, committed 14 fouls and had 15 shots on goal. Tech sophomore Lizzie Pruitt recorded her first in goal start of the season. She had 10 saves. Head Coach Felix Oskam Prior to coming to Tech in 1995, Oskam served for three years as an assistant coach for both the men's and women's programs at the University of Tulsa. During the 1993 season, the Tulsa women's program finished ranked 18th in the nation. In 1991, the Tulsa men's team achieved a national ranking of 17. Oskam is currently a staff coach and instructor for North Texas Soccer Association, a Region III Olympic Development Program (ODP) staff coach and the Director of Coaching for the girls competitive team, the Lubbock Elite Soccer Club. He has also worked as a staff coach for the ODP in Oklahoma and coached the Blackwatch '80 girls select team in Tulsa. Oskam played 12 years of club soccer in the Netherlands before attending the University of North Texas. While at North Texas, he helped guide the Eagles to their first national ranking and was twice chosen as a Texas Collegiate Soccer League All-Star. Oskam holds a United States Soccer Federation National "A" license and is a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
