Red Raiders Prepare to Spook Metroplex teamsThe Red Raiders are preparing for their last road trip of the season. They will travel to the Metroplex to play Texas Christian University and the University of Texas. On Wednesday, Oct 30, the Red Raiders face former Southwest Conference foe TCU. The Horned Frogs are 7-10 overall and 2-4 in Western Athletic Conference play. They are led by head coach David Rubinson, who has a record of 100-172-33 in his 15 years at TCU. The last meeting between the two teams was on Nov. 2 at the SWC Soccer championships. The Red Raiders won the match in a shootout. The series record stand at 0-2-1. Game time is 3 p.m. Tech will then travel the short distance to Denton to take on North Texas at 1 p.m. on Halloween. The Lady Eagles are 9-7 this season with a 2-4 mark in Big West play. They are led by head coach John Hedlund who has a record of 11-6-1 in his one year at North Texas. Tech leads the series 1-0-1. The last meeting between the two teams was on Sept. 24, when the two tied at 3-3 in Denton. "It is really important for us to finish up strong. These are two teams we are familiar with, but we have to concentrate on what is before us and not what is down the road," head coach Diane Nichols said. Tech secures tournament bid with weekend winThe Red Raider soccer team not only defeated Iowa State and lost to Nebraska this weekend, but more importantly they assured themselves a spot in the inaugural Big 12 Conference Soccer Championships. On Friday, Tech shutout Iowa State 4-0. Kristi Patterson scored the first goal off an assist from Julie Clement in the 27 minute of play. Amaris Weeks-Smith scored the second goal of the half with one second remaining. In second half play, Patterson scored in the 67 minute off an assist from Kristy Frantz. The final goal of the game came off a spectacular heel shot from Weeks-Smith. "I was really trying to get the ball in back to the middle and...well, if it goes in, it goes in," Weeks-Smith said. The win put the Red Raiders in the number four spot for the Big 12 Championship. "After the game I told the girls that they just bought themselves a ticket to St. Louis with that win," Nichols said. After such a significant win, the Red Raiders could not rest up. They hosted nationally ranked Nebraska on Sunday. First half action saw both teams fairly even at the half, the game was scoreless with Tech and Nebraska having three shots on goal and one save a piece. However, that soon changed. The Huskers scored in the 60th minute off a shot from Isabelle Morneau. Sharlota Nonen scored the final goal of the game in the 75th minute. "The goals Nebraska made were tremendous goals. Our goalkeeper (Lizzie Pruitt) did an excellent job today. Cece Dillon also had a great game. She came off the bench and really helped our defense. Hopefully we will get to face Nebraska again in the Big 12 tournament," Nichols said. Weekend Game Notes
Big 12 Soccer ChampionshipThe 1996 Big 12 Conference Soccer Championship will be held Novemeber 7, 9, 10 at the St. Louis Soccer Complex in St. Louis, Mo. The top six teams based on regular season results will qualify for the tournament. A point system used throughout the season will determine those teams and their respective seedings. The bracketing will be as follows: Thursday: Game 1-5 p.m.-Seed 3 v. Seed 6 Game 2-7:30 p.m.-Seed 4 v. Seed 5 Saturday: Game 3-11 a.m.-Seed 1 v. Winner game 1 Game 4-1 p.m.-Seed 2 v.
