IRVING, Texas – After hitting 7-for-9 with three doubles, a home run and five RBIs, Texas Tech outfielder Caden Ferraro was named the Big 12s Newcomer of the Week, the league announced Monday.   Â
The Big 12s leader in average and on-base percentage, Ferraro helped the Red Raider sweep Penn State, as Tech outscored the Nittany Lions 50-17 over the three game weekend series.
A native of Pearland, Ferraro is now hitting .471 on the season with an impressive on-base percentage of .608.
After going 2-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored in the Red Raiders 15-7 win over Penn State on Friday, Ferraro went 2-for-2 and reached base in all four trips to the plate in Saturday's 21-6 run-rule win.
On Sunday, Ferraro one-upped his 2-for-2 day, going 3-for-3 with two walks to close the weekend on an 11-plate appearance reached base streak, the longest in Big 12 play since Ivan Melendez reached base in 13-straight trips to the plate.
Ferraro is the second Red Raider to earn the league's Newcomer of the Week award, as SS Linkin Garica was the Feb. 23 recipient of the award. Â
Winners of 10-of-11 overall, the Red Raiders close a 15-game homestand this week when they welcome No. 24 UTSA for a two-game midweek series (Tuesday and Wednesday) and face Kansas on the weekend.
