No. 2 LSU defeats No. 7 Tech in second round

BATON ROUGE, La. – Senior Bailey Maupin recorded 500+ points in her second-straight season, but the No. 7-seeded Texas Tech Lady Raiders fell to the No. 2 LSU Tigers, 101-47, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday afternoon at the Maravich Assembly Center.

Maupin recorded a team-best 19 points and three 3-pointers in the game for Texas Tech (26-8). After totaling her 29th double-digit scoring game this season, the Gruver, Texas native also added four rebounds, a steal and a team-leading three assists against the Tigers (29-5).

In the Texas Tech Women's Basketball record book, Maupin will finish second in 3-pointer attempts (618), third in free throw percentage (.835), third in free throws made (486), fourth in career scoring (1,825 points), fourth in 3-pointers made (199), fifth in free throw attempts (582), seventh in field goal attempts (1,422) and 10th in field goals made (570). In addition, her 518 points this year is the 23rd best in history, while her 69 three-pointers and 206 three-point attempts in 2025-26 are ranked ninth and sixth for single-season records, respectively.

"I sure take a lot of pride in it [on exceeding expectations]," Maupin said. "This is something that we've been working on for a lot of years, especially myself for four years. We have been working to get to this position. We got to this position, we advanced and like [Coach Gerlich] said, LSU's a really, really good basketball team. At the end of the day, we gave it what we could, but moving forward, knowing that we got the program back to where I think it deserves to be and will continue to be for a long time is an honor."

Senior Snudda Collins put up eight points in the game to finish the season with 490 points. She posted two triples, three boards, two blocks and a steal in the game. Leading the Lady Raiders on the glass was Denae Fritz, who had six against LSU. She also totaled six points, two blocks and a steal.

"Honestly, when I first came [to Texas Tech], I had no idea this year was going to go the way it went," Collins said. "When I came in, obviously I wanted to have a better year than I had previously, so I kind of bought into that. I trusted Coach Gerlich, all of the coaching stuff and what they presented to me, and it just worked out."

LSU went on an 8-0 run in the first three minutes of the game to force a Texas Tech timeout. After going down 10-0, the Lady Raiders responded when both Gemma Núñez and Maupin hit threes to cut the deficit to four with 4:44 left in the period. LSU went up 12-6, but Maupin added three free throws after being fouled on a triple to make it 12-9. LSU scored a fastbreak layup off a steal, but Maupin connected with two more free throws to answer. The Tigers hit a three to lead 17-11, then Maupin made one of her own. LSU scored a midrange jumper to lead 19-14 after one.

The Tigers once again started the quarter on a run, scoring the first 12 points of the second to take a 31-14 lead. Fritz made a corner three to stop the Tiger run, but then LSU made one on the next possession to hold the 34-17 advantage with 3:45 left in the half. In answer, Maupin scored a jumper, then Fritz hit another three. However, the Tigers scored the next four points to maintain their lead. Maupin once again made a triple, but LSU closed it out with three points and the 43-25 lead at the half.

Sarengbe Sanogo began the third quarter with a layup, but the Tigers responded with a 13-0 run to take the 56-27 lead. The Lady Raiders stopped the run when Maupin made a free throw, but the Tigers scored four-straight points to force a Tech timeout. Jada Malone was able to score a second-chance layup after getting an offensive board as LSU led 60-30. The Tigers followed with a 16-2 run to lead 76-32 after three.

LSU scored the first eight points of the final quarter until Maupin stopped the run with a layup. LSU followed with the next six points until Sanogo made a free throw and Sidney Love scored a second-chance bucket after grabbing the offensive board. Texas Tech got a couple threes from Collins and a layup by Sanogo to make it 94-45 with 2:19 left. The Tigers closed out the gave with a 3-pointer as they won it by a 101-47 score.

The Lady Raiders finish the season with a 26-8 overall record, their most wins since 2002-03, and with their first Round of 32 appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2005.
