No. 20 Tech defeats Arizona State on Senior Day

LUBBOCK, Texas – Junior Jalynn Bristow totaled 18 points to help the No. 20 Texas Tech Lady Raiders to a 58-51 win against the Arizona State Sun Devils on Sunday afternoon at the United Supermarkets Arena for Senior Day.
This win moved the Lady Raiders to 25-6 overall and 12-6 in Big 12 play as Tech finished tied for fourth in conference with Oklahoma State. This is the Lady Raiders' highest conference finish since 2012-13, while they also totaled the most overall wins since 2003-04 and the most Big 12 wins since 2004-05.
Against Arizona State (22-9, 9-9 Big 12), Bristow led the way with 18 points on 6-for-8 shooting from the field (.750) and 2-for-3 shooting from behind the arc (.667). Bristow added four rebounds and a block in the win, while totaling her 16th double-figure scoring game this year. Senior Jada Malone added her ninth double-digit game of the season with 11 points on 80.0 percent shooting from the field (.4-for-5).
Senior Denae Fritz was just behind with 10 points on 60.0 percent shooting (3-for-5) and 50.0 percent shooting from three (2-for-4). Fritz recorded her ninth double-figure scoring game and tallied five rebounds, as assist, a steal and a block. Senior Adlee Blacklock gave the Lady Raiders a huge spark in the game, totaling six points and five boards against the Sun Devils.
Leading the team in both assists and rebounds was Gemma Núñez with four and eight, respectively. The Lady Raiders shot 42.9 percent from the field (18-for-42) and 88.9 percent from the free throw line (16-for-18). Tech held Arizona State to just 23.5 percent from the three and forced 17 turnovers.
The Lady Raiders started the game with a 3-pointer from Bristow on the first possession. Arizona State answered with four points for a 4-3 advantage. Then, both teams remained scoreless for over four minutes of play until the Sun Devils got a midrange jumper. Tech made its first basket since the opening drive at the 3:22 mark when Bristow scored on a driving layup. Arizona State immediately answered with a second-chance layup before the Lady Raiders got a free throw from Malone to cut into the ASU lead, 8-6. Bailey Maupin added another free throw, then the Sun Devils scored a jumper to make it 10-7. Bristow responded by scoring the next seven points for Tech, recording 12 of the Lady Raiders' 14 points, for a 14-10 lead after one.
The Lady Raiders forced their second five-second turnover of the game to start the second quarter as Núñez kept up the run for Tech with a driving layup right after. Arizona State stopped the 9-0 run with two free throws, but Bristow once again made a bucket to increase the lead to six points. The Sun Devils closed the gap with a 5-0 run before Malone stopped it with a layup thanks to a dish from Snudda Collins. Arizona State made it a one-point game with two more free throws heading into the media timeout. The Sun Devils went on a run to take a 25-20 lead, until Maupin nailed a three and Sarengbe Sanogo scored a second-chance layup for the 25-25 tie. However, the Sun Devils went ahead by two after making free throws to lead at the half.
The first bucket of the third quarter was scored by Bristow with a turnaround jumper at the 8:21 mark to tie it at 27-all. Arizona State scored the next five points before Malone connected with two free throws. The Sun Devils took a 34-29 lead, but Sidney Love responded with an and-one opportunity for three points. Fritz followed with a 3-pointer before Arizona State stopped the Tech run with a layup. Malone sparked a 12-0 run for the Lady Raiders right after, led by Blacklock with six-straight points to end the quarter to give Tech the 47-36 advantage.
The Sun Devils answered back with a 6-0 run to start the fourth period. Fritz stopped their momentum with her second three of the game. Arizona State made a free throw with 4:23 left in the game to cut the Lady Raider lead to seven. The Lady Raiders broke the Sun Devils' press and got a quick layup from Fritz. Arizona State followed with two free throws, then the Lady Raiders once again got a fastbreak layup, this time from Malone, to lead 54-45 with 1:27 left. Núñez added two more free throws for Tech, but Arizona State responded with a three. Tech got a few more free throws to close out the game, 58-51, for their 25th win of the year. Â
Up next, the Lady Raiders head to Kansas City, Mo., for the Big 12 Tournament on March 4-8. Texas Tech will be a 5-seed in the tournament and will face the winner of Cincinnati and K-State on March 5 at the T-Mobile Center.
