Zaretsky in the hunt through two rounds at Carmel Cup

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — Texas Tech women's golf senior Lauren Zaretsky stayed in the hunt at the Carmel Cup, shooting a 1-over-par 73 in Saturday's second round and is even-par after 36 holes. Zaretsky is in a tie for seventh place, where she was after the first round, with the help of two birdies on the front nine and seven straight pars to finish round two.

Zaretsky sits five shots off the lead of Texas A&M's Vanessa Borovilos going into Sunday's final round.

Freshman Amy Squires and junior Cameron Freund both made significant jumps up the leaderboard on Saturday. Posting her first score in red numbers as a Red Raider, Squires made four birdies, including two on the back nine, to only one bogey as she came home at 1-under-par 35. The Aussie jumped 11 spots on the leaderboard to share a tie for 14th.

Meanwhile, Freund got hot on the back nine, carding three birdies in a four-hole stretch en route to a 71 across No. 11 and No. 14. The junior from Maryland climbed 21 spots on the leaderboard to a tie for 21st.

As a team, the Red Raiders moved up three spots into a tie for fourth, led by Squires and Freund, both posting subpar rounds.

Texas A&M expanded on its first-round lead, posting a team total of 2-under-par to reach a 9-under-par total through 36 holes. The Aggies control a 24-shot lead over Vanderbilt.

Aggies' Borovilos has a one-shot lead at 5-under-par over her teammate Cayetana Fernandez Garcia-Poggio and Mississippi State's Avery Weed.

Sunday's final round tee times will begin at 6:30 a.m. PT to 8:50 a.m. PT.
