Zaretsky sits two shots off lead after round one of Carmel Cup

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — Senior Lauren Zaretsky led the way for the Texas Tech women's golf team during the first round of the Carmel Cup with a 1-under-par round of 71 on Friday. Her performance placed her in a tie for seventh in the field of 48, and the team sits in seventh place at Pebble Beach Golf Links.
The Canadian carded three birdies in her first 11 holes before dropping two shots on the back nine, as the lone Red Raider under par. She is only two behind Texas A&M's Brynn Kort and Cayetana Fernandez through 18 holes.
Two fresh faces in Wake Forest transfer Denisa Vodickova and Aussie freshman Amy Squires both placed in the top 25.
Squires birdied three times in a four-hole stretch from No. 3 to No. 6 on the front nine on her way to a 3-over-par 75 to place in a tie for 25th. Vodickova registered three birdies and came down the back nine steady with six consecutive pars.
Texas A&M commands a 13-shot lead over tournament host Mississippi State. The Aggies were the sole team to shoot a team round under par on Friday among the eight in the field.
Round two tee times will begin at 6:30 a.m. PT and run through 8:50 a.m. on Saturday.
