LUBBOCK – One day before their first official training session and just over a week before playing a scrimmage, members of the Texas Tech soccer program talked with the local media about the upcoming season and building on the program's standard of success. The Red Raiders are coming off a season where they went 15-5-2 overall, 8-1-2 in Big 12 play, advanced to the NCAA Round of 32 and owned a dominating 45-18 goal advantage. "We say not to look in the past but let it help you build your confidence," Tech head coach Tom Stone said during his media availability which also included goalkeeper Faith Nguyen, midfielder Peyton Parsons and midfielder Sam Courtwright.
"The vibes have been really high this summer," said Nguyen, who returns from a 2024 All-Big 12 First Team season where she recorded 10 clean sheets and 13 wins. "We have a lot of players with experience and great players coming in. We're all excited about getting going and competing again. The biggest thing for me is a strong mentality. It's important to carry over that same hunger we had last year into this season."
Tech begins its preseason training schedule on Tuesday at the John Walker Soccer Complex where it has a little over a week before traveling to play Denver in a scrimmage on Thursday, August 7 in Colorado. The preseason goes quick for the Red Raiders with the season-opener on the road at San Diego State on August 14 before their home opener against Youngstown State on Sunday, August 17.
"Each team has a certain level of veteran players that can get you to assimilate quicker," Stone said. "We have that. The idea is that we are ready to go when we get to Denver. We have nine days and it's going to be a strong preseason test because they're a great team. I like our leadership and our player availability is high right now. Our goal is to have the team understand what the expectations are at each position and within our system. Beyond that, it's all about competition and getting after it every day."
