
Team USA prevails against Germany in group play

ESSEN, Germany – Team USA opened up group play at the World University Games with a victory against host-team Germany by a 69-63 score on Friday night at Grugahalle Arena.
Four players recorded double-figure outings, led by DeYona Gaston with 20 points on 8-for-11 shooting (.727). She also picked up five rebounds with a steal and a block. Adlee Blacklock finished with 15 points and went a perfect 9-for-9 at the charity stripe. Blacklock, along with Denae Fritz and Jalynn Bristow, led the team with two steals each. Fritz posted 14 points on the night and went 6-for-6 at the free throw line. She added six rebounds and three assists against Germany.
Sidney Love tallied 12 points on 50 percent shooting (4-for-8) with a team-best four assists. Leading the way on the rebounding side was Kalysta Martin with eight boards. Team USA shot 41.5 percent from the field (22-for-53) and went 23-for-26 at the free throw line (.884). The Americans also added 10 assists and 40 rebounds, outrebounding the Germans by 17. Germany was also held to 33.9 percent from the field (18-for-53) and totaled 18 turnovers.

Team USA is set to play Chinese Taipei tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. CEST/10:30 a.m. CT for the second game in group play. Â
