Logan Hughes and Peyton Schulze each homered twice while Logan Bevis tossed three scoreless innings to close out the Red Raiders 10th win of the season at Rip Griffin Park
LUBBOCK, Texas – Peyton Schulze homered twice, drove in five and scored four times, while Logan Hughes also homered twice and drove in three in Texas Tech's 13-6 midweek win over New Mexico State Tuesday night at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
After lightning in the area delayed the game by 70 minutes, Texas Tech (17-28) overcame deficits of 3-0 and 5-3 to secure the midweek victory. The Red Raiders scored in five straight innings including three-straight multiple run innings in the fourth, fifth and sixth.
After falling behind 3-0 early, Tech tied the game at three in the bottom of the second on an RBI double from Schulze, an RBI grounder from Jace Souza and an RBI single from Tracer Lopez.
The single for Lopez extended his team-high hitting streak to 13 games and extended his on-base streak to 20 consecutive games, while Hughes extended his on-base streak to 31 games.
With the game tied at three in the third, Tech starter Connor Mohan allowed a pair of two-out runs that gave New Mexico State (22-26) a 5-3 lead.
Down by a pair, Tech immediately cut the Aggies lead in half when an RBI single from Robin Villeneuve plated Damian Bravo who walked. The run for Bravo was his second of the night and brought the Red Raiders to within 5-4.
After a diving catch from centerfielder Kyeler Thompson stranded a pair of runners in scoring position and got Bevis through the fourth, Tech used the first of two Hughes bombs to take a 6-5 lead. The ball traveled 401 feet.
Armed with the lead Bevis erased a lead-off walk with an inning-ending double play that kept the Red Raiders on top by a run.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Red Raiders quickly went on top 8-5, using a lead-off single from Antonelli Savattere and a pair of walks to load the bases with one out for catcher Dylan Maxcey, who singled home Savattere. The inning's second and final run come home on an RBI groundout from Lopez.
Like he did in the fifth, Bevis made the runs in the previous half-inning stand up as the USF transfer stranded a lead-off single and a runner in scoring position with nobody out.
For the second-straight at-bat, Hughes homered, this time in lead-off fashion. The blast was his 16th home run of the season and landed on bleachers of the track in right-center field. The ball traveled an estimated 451-feet. Â
With two outs and nobody on, Tech got a walk from Villeneuve and the first of two long balls from Schulze to take an 11-5 lead.
After New Mexico State struck for a two-out run off Zach Erdman, the Red Raiders turned to JT Drake in an 11-6 game in the eighth. Drake was sharp in his two innings as the righty struck out four of seven batters he faced and allowed just one single.
In the eighth, Schulze again plated Villeneuve with a home run as this time the Cal transfer homered to left center. The ball traveled 413 feet.
Up 13-6, Drake stranded a one-out single with back-to-back strikeouts to close out the victory.
