LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech's Klara Hurtova shot an 11-over-par 83 in Sunday's opening round of the NCAA Lubbock Regional at the Rawls Course. The sophomore, whose group was last to tee off at 3:20 p.m. in the afternoon, finished at dusk after a day-long battle with the West Texas winds.
While it did not rain on Sunday, winds gusted over 30 mph on a cool and overcast day that challenged the entire field, as the 65-player field owned a 77.11 scoring average on the par 72 course. Tee times for round one of the regional began in the late afternoon following a morning practice round, after the regional was moved up one day due to the threat of inclement weather for an event mandated to finish by Wednesday.
Hurtova's first round included five bogeys over the opening nine holes as she finished the front nine 5-over-par. After a par to begin the back nine, the sophomore dropped six shots over the next four holes with three bogeys and a triple bogey on No. 13. She regrouped over the final four holes, knocking in four-straight pars to finish Sunday's first round.
Hurtova is no stranger to the Rawls Course and will look to bounce back in the second round; she owns competition scores at the Rawls Course of 73 (+1), 70 (-2) and 67 (-5) in this past fall's Red Raider Invitational.
The first groups on Monday are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m., weather permitting. Hurtova's second-round tee time is scheduled for 12:50 p.m.
