Matt Gardner was a member of Texas Tech’s staff for four College World Series appearances in his 12 seasons
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech head baseball coach Tim Tadlock announced Saturday the resignation of Matt Gardner as an assistant coach. Gardner recently completed his 12th season on the Texas Tech staff and sixth as the Red Raiders' pitching coach.
"I'd like to thank Matt and his family for their dedication to our baseball program the past 12 seasons," Tadlock said. "Ultimately, this season did not meet the standards and expectations we have as a program. Our goal is to compete for Big 12 championships and to put ourselves in position to win a national championship. That goal will remain as we search for a new pitching coach and begin to build our roster for next season."
The Red Raiders advanced to the College World Series in Omaha four times during Gardner's tenure with two trips (2014, 2016) as the program's volunteer assistant coach and the other two following his promotion to pitching coach in 2018. Texas Tech also claimed three Big 12 regular-season titles during that stretch, which came during the 2016, 2017 and 2019 campaigns.
Texas Tech ended its season with a first round loss to Cincinnati in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship on Wednesday as the Red Raiders finished 20-33 overall and 13-17 in Big 12 Conference play.
