The Red Raiders fell despite a two-run home run from Logan Hughes
LUBBOCK, Texas – Battling more uncharacteristic stormy and humid weather, Texas Tech Baseball dropped a midweek contest to UTRGV, 13-4, Tuesday afternoon at Rip Griffin Park at Dan Law Field.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first, Texas Tech (15-25) used a lead-off single from Tracer Lopez, a stolen base and an RBI single from Kyeler Thompson to pull to within 2-1.
Following a walk by Logan Hughes, the Red Raiders used a grounder and a sac-fly by Antonelli Savattere to tie the game at two-all.
The game remained tied until the top of the third when a fielding error extended what turned out to be a seven-run inning after UTRGVs (29-15) Steven Lancia hit a three-run home run and Vaqueros centerfielder Damien Whitfield hit a grand slam.
UTRGVs two home runs accounted for all seven runs in the frame and gave the visitors a 9-2 lead. Â
With two outs in the third, Tech got a triple from Damian Bravo, before the game was suspended for nearly three and a half hours.
After the delay of three hours and 22 minutes, the game resumed with Savattere at the plate and Bravo on third. Despite the lengthy delay, UTRGVs starter, Robert Bonilla returned following the delay, and coaxed a first pitch groundout from Savattere to strand Bravo.
Armed with the momentum again, UTRGV scored once in the fourth and twice in the fifth on a two-run home run from designated hitter Armani Raygoza. The blast gave UTRGV a 12-2 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, Tech answered the two-run Vaqueros home run with a two-run shot from Hughes. The home run was the outfielder's team leading 14th longball and fourth in the last six games.
The home run was all Tech was able to manage the rest of the way, as UTRGVs Nick Nolan and Steven Olivia combined to toss 4.1 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just two hits and two walks.
