The Red Raiders slugged six homers while Zane Petty tossed eight strong innings
TEMPE, Ariz. – Behind eight strong innings from junior Zane Petty and six home runs from five different players, Texas Tech Baseball downed Arizona State 12-8 Saturday afternoon to salvage the series finale of the weekend set.
After falling in heartbreaking fashion (9-8) in the continuation of Friday night's suspended game, Texas Tech (12-23, 8-10 Big 12) got off to a great start in the final game, when a double from Kyeler Thompson and a two run bomb from Logan Hughes gave the Red Raiders an early 2-0 lead.
In their home half of the first, Arizona State (25-15, 11-7 Big 12) used a lead-off double, a triple and a fielding error to pull even at two-all.
With Matt King on second and no out, Petty coaxed a medium range fly ball to Damian Bravo in left. Looking to place a runner on third with one out, King attempted to take third, but was ultimately gunned down at third by Bravo.
The 7-5 double play allowed Petty to escape the frame without further damage. With the tough first inning behind him Petty settled into a rhythm as the righty retired 10-straight batters from the end of the first until the bottom of the fifth.
Locked in a tight 1-1 game, the Red Raiders ultimately struck for four runs in the fourth off ASU starter Jaden Alaba on a lead-off home run from Tracer Lopez and a three-run homer from Davis Rivers. The blast gave Tech a 6-2 lead.
Back in front for the first time since the first, Petty made the four-run winning stand, as he retired ASU in order on just 10 pitches.
With Petty dealing, the Red Raiders increased their lead to 7-2 in the fifth when Davis Rivers launched his second home run of the game. The ball estimated to leave off Rivers' bat at 113 MPH and traveled almost 438-feet.
In the fifth, Petty saw his 10-bater retired streak snapped when ASU Kien Vu doubled to left, but the starter needed just two pitches to a coax a lineout to center and a groundout to put two outs on the board.
With two outs and Vu on third, Petty won a full-count battle with Kyle Walker to send the game to the sixth with Tech on top 7-2.
The game remained 7-2 Tech until the eighth when a two-RBI double from Hughes and a 105 MPH two-run home run from bravo gave Tech an 11-2 lead.
With his pitch count just under 85, Petty became the first Red Raider to reach the eighth this season when he reemerged for the bottom of the eighth.
In the eighth, ASU pulled to within 11-3 on a pair of doubles from centerfielder Isaiah Jackson and Landon Harriston.
Just one out from recording the final out of the eighth, Petty won another full-count battle with King to send the game in the ninth.
In the ninth, the Red Raiders got a lead-off home run from Peyton Schulze to take a 12-3 lead. The blast for Schulze was his first as a Red Raider and capped a 4-for-5 day for the Cal Transfer. Schulze finished just a triple shy of a cycle.
