Tech drops series opener to TCU
March 21, 2025 | Baseball
The Red Raiders saw a three-game winning streak snapped
After a scoreless top of the first, Texas Tech (6-12, 3-1 Big 12) got a 100 MPH lead-off single from outfielder Kyeler Thompson and a stolen base to place a runner in scoring position with nobody out. Â
Looking to escape the early trouble, TCUs (16-6, 2-2 Big 12) Tommy LaPour used a strike out and a pop-up to put two outs on the board.
With two outs, and Logan Hughes at the plate, Thompson broke for third on a spiked pitch from LaPour. Thompson was ultimately thrown out at third for the final out.
After TCU struck first on a one-out fielder choice in the second, the Red Raiders tied the game on a lead-off home run from Hughes. The bomb was Hughes' team-leading sixth of the season and traveled 405 feet.
With the game tied once again, TCU used a lead-off error and a sun-aided double to place a pair of runners on with nobody. After a groundout gave the Horned Frogs a 2-1 lead, Heuer rebounded to put the second out of the inning on the board when he gunned down a runner at home on a comebacker.
Just one out from getting through the frame and with a runner on first, Heuer allowed a single that placed runners on first and second with two outs. The Frogs then used a two-RBI triple from catcher Nolan Trager and a two-run home run from shortstop Anthony Silva to take a 7-1 lead.
Tech threatened in the home half of the third when Thompson doubled with one out, but LaPour used a fly-out and pop-up to fire the shutdown inning.
After TCU struck for singular runs in the fourth and fifth, Tech used a lead-off walk, a stolen base and a groundout to place Tracer Lopez on third for Thompson. The centerfielder barreled a ball right at Silva that resulted in a groundout that plated Lopez to bring Tech to within 9-2.
The run was the final that the Red Raiders would manage on the night, as LaPour went six innings on Friday allowing just six hits and two runs. The righty walked two and struck out five over his 105-pitch outing.
After LaPour was finished for the night, TCU got three perfect innings from a trio of relievers. In the end, TCU retired the final 10 Tech batters of the night.
Both Thompson and Hughes turned in 2-for-4 nights, as the outfielders drove in both of Tech's run. Thompson stole his 16th base while Hughes drove in his 23rd run of the season.
