Tech picks up walk-off win over No. 16 Nebraska
CLEARWATER, Florida – No. 10 Texas Tech (4-1) looked to put some pieces together on day three of the NFCA Leadoff Classic as the Red Raiders defeated No. 16 Nebraska, 6-5, in walk-off fashion before taking care of business against Iowa with an 11-0 win in five innings.
The craziness from last night's win against Penn State carried over into today's game against Nebraska.
The Cornhuskers were firmly in control of the game early, scoring two runs in the first and then added three more runs in the fifth and sixth innings to make it 5-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth. Nebraska ace, Jordy Bahl, gave Tech trouble allowing just three hits through five innings before a Mihyia Davis single got things rolling.
Raegan Jennings followed her by getting on base and Alana Johnson passed the bat as well with a single into left field. Anya German delivered an RBI on a fielder's choice to get Tech on the board.
Down 5-1 with runners on second and third with two outs, NiJaree Canady stepped into the box. The reigning National Player of the Year took the first pitch she saw dead center to breathe life into the Red Raiders and make it a new game going into the final inning.
Brenlee Gonzales and Chloe Riassetto were solid in the circle all game and kept Tech's offense within striking distance. Gonzales sat down the Cornhuskers in order in the top of the seventh to bring back up the hot bats of Tech.
Victoria Valdez pinch hit and roped a single through the right side to lead things off in the bottom of the seventh. Davis lined a one-out single into center to put before Jennings advanced the runners to second and third to bring up Alana Johnson.
Johnson put the ball in play with a hard hit to shortstop forcing a Nebraska error and allowing two runs to score to complete the comeback and improve to 3-1.
Tech's hot offense carried over against the Hawkeyes as they batted around the order, putting up seven runs in the first inning. Tech put up four more runs to go up 11-0 as the combination of Canady and Samantha Lincoln allowed just two hits and shut out Iowa to end the game early.
UP NEXT: The Red Raiders will finish up their NFCA Leadoff Classic appearance against Kennesaw State tomorrow at 12 p.m. CT.
