Volleyball to play two top-25 opponents this week
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech volleyball (10-16, 2-12) will make its last road trip of the season as they take on No. 23 Baylor and No. 20 TCU on Thursday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m., respectively.
The Bears (15-9, 10-6) and Horned Frogs (18-9, 8-7) both got wins over the Red Raiders in Lubbock earlier this year and Tech will look to answer with road wins of their own. Historically, Tech is 52-45 against the Bears and 14-19 against TCU. The Red Raiders always play their Texas counterparts tough and will look to do it again this week.
Quick Recap:
Tech is coming off two heartbreaking losses this past week. They dropped matches to West Virginia and Cincinnati in five sets but had encouraging performances from standout players like Kalli Jioshvili Ravva, Kenna McKenzie and Sierra Grizzle to name a few.
McKenzie set a new career high with 23 kills against the Bearcats while Jioshvili Ravva finished with 21 kills and 14 digs to record her sixth double-double of the season. Grizzle posted back-to-back 20+ dig performances including a 28-dig double-double against Cincinnati thanks to 10 assists. Grizzle also set a new career high with five aces in a match against the Mountaineers. Peyton Dunn also had a strong performance against the Bearcats, posting 40 assists and 14 digs in what was her sixth double-double of the season.
Quick Hits:
Junior setter Katelyn Cochran is just 44 assists away from 1,000 for her career. The California native has been with Tech all three seasons and has played a vital role in the team's offense this year along with fellow setter Peyton Dunn.
Kalli Jioshvili Ravva has been exceptionally through Big 12 play, leading the Red Raiders in points, kills and attacks while also being second in digs and third in aces. After not playing much to begin the season, the French native has been a mainstay in the lineup and has helped propel Tech to its two wins against UCF and Arizona where she combined for 33 kills and nine digs while hitting an efficient .229 on 83 attempts.
For most players, a "sophomore slump" is a common occurrence. For Addie Kanouff, her sophomore year has been a welcomed sight for the Red Raiders. After appearing in just four matches last season, the 6'5 rightside has taken on a much bigger role this year and she has performed brilliantly. Kanouff is currently second on the team in points (248.5), kills (220), hitting percentage (.231) and blocks (51.0). She recorded a career-high 16 kills in Tech's win over UAlbany and has recorded seven matches where she has hit over .300 with 10+ kills.
Freshmen Kenna McKenzie and Shelby Ignash have seen increased playing time over the course of the preseason as they continue to take advantage of their opportunities. Setters Peyton Dunn and Katelyn Cochran have done a stellar job of setting up their hitter for success as Cochran recently recorded 52 assists in a match, a career best. Sierra Grizzle is top 30 in the country in total digs (488) and currently leads the Big 12 in total digs and digs per set (4.74).
The Red Raiders are the only team in the country to have at least nine freshmen while also having zero true seniors. Tech has three graduate seniors and are one of just four teams in the country that has zero true seniors joining Princeton, Villanova and Memphis in this unique feat. Tech's nine freshmen are also the second most in the country behind St. Mary's, Pacific, Holy Cross and Wichita St. who all have 10.
