Dickey tabbed one of 10 semifinalists for Doak Walker Award
November 18, 2025 | Football
DALLAS – Texas Tech sophomore running back Cameron Dickey was named a semifinalist for the 2025 Doak Walker Award, as announced by the PwC SMU Athletic Forum on Tuesday. It marks three consecutive seasons that the Red Raiders have had one of the 10 semifinalists for the award that is presented annually to the nation's most outstanding college running back.
Dickey, following in the footsteps of Tahj Brooks, is leading a Texas Tech rushing attack in 2025, and the Big 12 conference, with 944 rushing yards and 13 rushing touchdowns following week 12 of the college football season. Dickey is seeking a milestone not even the Red Raiders' all-time running back accomplished, and that's leading the Big 12 in rushing yards, and only two Red Raiders – Taurean Henderson (2005) and Baron Batch (2009) – have previously led the conference in rushing touchdowns.
Dickey, who is 56 yards shy of 1,000 rushing yards this season, is on the cusp of becoming only the ninth Texas Tech player to own a 1,000-yard season, and could record the 14th 1,000-yard season overall. Dickey was the Doak Walker Award Player of the Week the weekend of Oct. 11, following a 263-yard, two-touchdown game that was the best single-game rushing mark to that point in the season.
The sophomore's 944 rushing yards rank 14th-best in the FBS through games played on Nov. 15, while his 13 rushing scores rank tied as the sixth-most among FBS players. His 2025 season has also already pushed him into the Red Raider record books as his 13 rushing touchdowns rank tied for No. 10 in single-season history. Dickey has scored two or more touchdowns in four games.
Three finalists for the 2025 Doak Walker Award will be announced a week from today, and the winner will be unveiled live on ESPN during The Home Depot College Football Awards on Fri., Dec. 12. The formal presentation of the award will take place at the annual banquet on Jan. 30, 2026, in Dallas.
Texas Tech has a history with the award, with a pair of winners of it, as Byron Hanspard (1996) and Bam Morris (1993) are past Doak Walker Award winners.Â
The American, Big Ten, and Southeastern Conferences each have two of the semifinalists, while the Big 12, Conference USA, Mountain West, and Notre Dame, as an Independent, have one apiece. Only one of the 10 schools represented (Texas Tech) has had a previous Doak Walker Award winner.
Here's a thumbnail look at the semifinalists, listed alphabetically, six of whom were honored during the course of the season as the Doak Walker Award National Running Back of the Week:
Named after Doak Walker, a legendary figure in college football and the NFL, the Doak Walker Award presented by the PwC SMU Athletic Forum has been awarded to the nation's top running back since 1990. Since 2022, the award has recognized a national running back of the week. A select 20-person committee from the award's full voting body of media and past winners chooses the weekly recipient. On Aug. 5, a preseason candidates list was released and semifinalists for the award will be named on Nov. 18. At the annual banquet, the recipient of the 2025 PwC Doak Walker Legends Award also will be honored.
The Doak Walker Award is a member of the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA), which encompasses college football's most prestigious awards. The NCFAA's 25 awards have honored more than 950 recipients since 1935. This season, 13 NCFAA awards will honor national players of the week each Tuesday.
