LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire was selected Monday as The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week after leading the No. 8 Red Raiders to a convincing 29-7 victory over No. 7 BYU this past Saturday at Jones AT&T Stadium.
The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week award honors a football coach who led his team to a significant victory during the previous week, while also embodying the award's three pillars of scholarship, leadership and integrity. The award is presented by the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and the Peach Bowl.
The victory pushed the Red Raiders to 9-1 overall and atop the Big 12 standings at 6-1 in league play heading into their final two games of the regular season against UCF and at West Virginia. Texas Tech handed BYU its first loss of the season in a dominating defensive performance where the Red Raiders forced three takeaways and limited the Cougars to only a fourth-quarter touchdown. BYU's seven points marked the fewest allowed by the Red Raiders against a top-10 team since Texas Tech knocked off No. 8 Texas A&M, 14-7, in 1995.
"Coach McGuire has instilled a culture of belief, toughness and unity in his program," said Gary Stokan, Peach Bowl, Inc. CEO and president. "Saturday's win over a top-10 opponent showcased just how far he's taken the Texas Tech program and why the Red Raiders are now in position to potentially make their first-ever College Football Playoff appearance."
With its win over the Cougars, Texas Tech is the only team in the country with multiple wins over schools ranked in the top 15 of the initial College Football Playoff rankings. It was Texas Tech's ninth victory by 20 or more points this season, which easily leads the FBS and matches the most in school history. Texas Tech currently ranks second nationally in average margin of victory as the Red Raiders are outscoring opponents in wins to the tune of a 33.2 points this season, which trails only Utah (36.4) among schools with at least six wins.
McGuire is 32-17 overall now in his fourth season leading the Red Raiders as he's already secured Texas Tech's fourth-consecutive winning Big 12 record. Texas Tech leads all Big 12 programs with 22 conference wins (regardless of league affiliation) since McGuire was tabbed Texas Tech's head coach prior to the 2022 season.
"Coach McGuire has turned the Texas Tech football program into both Big 12 and CFP contenders," said Chairman of the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation Jim Terry. "His leadership, energy and commitment to his players, both on and off the field, exemplifies the values of The Dodd Trophy."
McGuire, who was named to the Dodd Trophy watch list in October, will look to push Texas Tech to its seventh 10-win season in program history Saturday when the Red Raiders host UCF for their home finale. Kickoff is slated for 2:30 p.m. CT with coverage on FOX and the Texas Tech Sports Network.
