Texas Tech will head into another road game at Arizona State with its highest national ranking since 2008
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech moved up again in the latest college football rankings Sunday as the Red Raiders are now No. 7 in the Associated Press poll and No. 8 in a vote of AFCA coaches compiled by USA Today.
Texas Tech stayed in the top 10 of both polls for the second-consecutive week as the Red Raiders were previously No. 9 in the AP and No. 10 in the coaches' poll prior to topping Kansas, 42-17, Saturday night at Jones AT&T Stadium. The victory improved the Red Raiders to 6-0 overall this season and as one of 11 undefeated teams remaining in college football.
This is the highest the Red Raiders have appeared in either poll since Nov. 23, 2008, when Texas Tech dropped to No. 7 in the AP rankings after losing its first game of the season at Oklahoma the previous day. The Red Raiders were previously No. 2 in both polls for three-consecutive weeks after defeating top-ranked Texas and No. 8 Oklahoma State in back-to-back games at home.
Texas Tech has dominated its opposition on its way to an undefeated start as the Red Raiders are the lone 6-0 team to win each of its games by at least 20 points. Texas Tech has won each of its three Big 12 games by at least 24 points, marking the first time a conference school has done so since Baylor in 2015. It is the sixth time in league history a Big 12 program has opened conference play with three-consecutive wins by 24 points or more.
Texas Tech enters a road matchup at Arizona State next Saturday with the highest point differential in college football as the Red Raiders have won by an average of 35.3 points per game thus far. The Red Raiders, who have not trailed in a single game this season, are the first Big 12 program to boast an average point differential of at least 35.3 and be 6-0 since Baylor in 2015.
The Red Raiders have done so with a combination of another high-powered offense to go along with a suffocating defense. Texas Tech heads to Tempe as one of only two teams in the country to rank in the top 10 for scoring defense (4th) and total defense (9th) as well as scoring offense (2nd) and total offense (1st), joining fellow unbeaten Indiana. That balanced script has pushed the Red Raiders to their first 6-0 start to a season since 2013 and its second 3-0 start to Big 12 play in as many years.
Kickoff between the Red Raiders and Sun Devils is slated for 3 p.m. CT Saturday afternoon from Mountain America Stadium in Tempe. Coverage will be provided nationally on FOX and the Texas Tech Sports Network.
