November 23, 2024 | Women's Basketball
LUBBOCK, Texas – Three Lady Raiders recorded double-digit performances as Texas Tech moved to 6-0 with a 78-70 victory against the New Orleans Privateers on Saturday afternoon at the United Supermarkets Arena.
Sophomore Jalynn Bristow had an impressive game against New Orleans (0-5) after shooting 7-of-13 from the field (.538) to tie her career-high in points with 17, while also tying her career-bests in rebounds (8) and blocks (2). In addition, Bristow grabbed four offensive rebounds to lead the team in that category and her seven made field goals are also a career high.
Junior Bailey Maupin had her fifth double-digit performance of the season and eighth career 20-plus point game after tallying 20 points on 6-for-11 shooting (.545). Maupin would hit a team-leading three 3-pointers in the game and added three boards, a team-high four assists and a career-best four steals. Junior Jasmine Shavers put up 10 points with four rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block. As a team, the Lady Raiders forced 26 turnovers, scoring 31 points off them, as well as totaled 15 steals, seven blocks and 37 rebounds.
New Orleans started the scoring in the game with a jumper for the early lead. After the Privateers went ahead 4-1, Jordyn Merritt answered with a layup, the Maupin would make two free throws for a 5-4 advantage. New Orleans didn't miss for almost the entire first half of the quarter as they went up 10-5. Maupin nailed a 3-pointer to make it 10-8, then free throws by Shavers and a layup from Bristow tied it at 12-12. The Privateers took a 19-12 lead, but the Lady Raiders responded by scoring 14 of the next 16 points to close the quarter, highlighted by an Adlee Blacklock three as well as steals and buckets by both Loghan Johnson and Bristow, to make it 26-21.
Shavers nailed a 3-pointer coming into the second period, then Maupin made one of her own as Tech led 32-23. The Lady Raiders followed that with an 8-2 run that began with a free throw from Maupin and ending with another Blacklock three. With the 40-27 advantage heading into the media timeout, the Lady Raiders would keep the momentum as they scored six more points in the quarter, led by Bristow with five, to take a 46-33 lead going into the half.
Shavers once again made the first bucket of the quarter as she connected with a layup, then Merritt scored a 3-pointer to make it 51-33 in the third. New Orleans answered with a 6-0 run before Shavers stopped it with a layup. Maupin made another three at the 5:27 mark and Maya Peat followed with a reverse layup and a free throw to complete the three-point play. Bristow added three points at the end of the period to give Tech the 63-48 advantage.
New Orleans began the final quarter on a 10-2 run to cut the deficit to eight points. Sarengbe Sanogo was able to get the lead back to 10 when she made a layup thanks to a dish from Merritt. New Orleans scored the next four points before Maupin hit a mid-range jumper to make it 69-61. Texas Tech would narrowly outscore the Privateers at the end of the game, 7-5, to move to 6-0 on the season.
Up next, Texas Tech travels to St. Thomas in the U.S. Virginia Islands to face Florida State, Gonzaga and Missouri State from Nov. 28-30.

On what about today's game stood out compared to previous games…
"We knew going into it that New Orleans was going to play really fast, and they try to make the game pretty ugly because they are so quick and they're little. So, they really tried to get a lot of shots up. I thought it took us a little while in the first quarter to figure out, obviously, and we knew it was going to be that way, but I thought that we made the right adjustments, and I thought that our kids responded well and kind of closed out the first quarter… They were able to take the lead back and kind of get their scoring under control. And then our second quarter was much better. So, I felt like we adjusted pretty well for three quarters, and then the fourth quarter, we kind of allowed [New Orleans] to continue to get paint touches and score in the paint, and then we just weren't knocking down shots and we have to knock down shots better. I mean, I keep saying it and I'm going to keep saying it, because I really believe in these girls, but we can shoot the basketball, and we're just not shooting it at a high clip just yet. But, I thought that Jalynn [Bristow] obviously helped us just getting some paint touches and especially against the zone early in the first half. And then I thought that Bailey [Maupin]obviously got some to go down, that helped us as well and just gave us a little bit of a spark."
On having good depth and ability for people to step up…
"You want to let them play through it a little bit. I still strongly believe in them, and I know that they can both score at a really high rate, and they're going to have rough nights. It was really good that Jalynn [Bristow] stepped up tonight, but I think they'll continue to play. I think you've seen them in big moments stepping up, and I think that's really important. Against Washington State, they both stepped up in a big way… That was a really intense game, coming down to the wire. I thought tonight, Bailey [Maupin] really stepped up late and finished the game out for us. We've played a lot of games here, back-to-back-to-back, and we're about to go play three in a row, but I also think for our kids, it'll probably be good for them to get away from home and play on the road a little bit, where we just have time to be all together. When it's just us on that sideline, I think that's really going to help us."
#1 Sophomore Jalynn Bristow
On her success in the first half...
"I was seeing the open looks. I mean, Coach [Gerlich] and I did watch film yesterday, so that helped being able to see those open looks, not as it's happening, but beforehand. Then after that, when the three wasn't falling, the pull up jumper was, so I just built off that."
On the adjustments made by the team after a slow start in the first quarter…
"We made some more adjustments in our press. Everything else felt like a lack of intensity and that coming off the press, those adjustments, kind of shifted everything."
#20 Junior Bailey Maupin
On her big performance toward the end of the game…
"At the end of the day, whoever is open is going to take the shots on this team. Whoever is on that night needs to be the person shooting, and it just happened to be me today. So, without my teammates putting me in those positions, I wouldn't have been able to score. Toward the end of the game, it was just a matter of getting stops and getting scores on the other end."
