Texas Tech turned in an impressive 3.2 GPA, its second-highest spring term GPA on record
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech student-athletes recorded yet another successful semester in the classroom this spring as the athletics department announced Friday it recorded its 17th-consecutive term with at least a 3.0 combined GPA and its second-highest spring term GPA in history.
Â
Successful semesters academically have become the norm for Texas Tech's more than 400 student-athletes as the GPA report featured nine teams with both their term and cumulative GPAs over 3.00 and 12 of 13 teams with a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher. As a department, Texas Tech recorded a 3.20 term GPA among its 13 teams*.
Â
"Our student-athletes continue to raise the bar in terms of success academically," Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt said. "We are proud to celebrate another successful semester in the classroom and the dedication our student-athletes and our staff at the Marsha Sharp Center show each and every day."
Â
The Red Raider women's golf program, which just returned from its appearance at the NCAA Championships, easily led all sport programs with a 3.92 term GPA, which raised its cumulative GPA to 3.73 that narrowly edged soccer (3.72) for the highest in the department. Soccer posted a 3.67 term GPA to rank second overall in that category followed by volleyball (3.52), women's tennis (3.45) and women's track and field (3.31).
Â
The women's golf program was one of three teams to record its highest spring term GPA on record, joining both football (3.08) and volleyball. Texas Tech also had five teams with their highest spring cumulative GPAs on record in women's golf, soccer, women's track and field (3.39), men's track and field (3.25) and football (3.15).
Â
In total, Texas Tech had 82 student-athletes (20 percent of total population) with a perfect term 4.0 GPA, while approximately 285 student-athletes completed the term with a 3.0 GPA or higher (69 percent). The department also boasted 74 student-athletes on the Dean's List and 60 that appeared on the President's List.
Â
Texas Tech student-athletes have a dedicated staff at the Marsha Sharp Center who guide each student-athlete to success from the time of enrollment to graduation. The Marsha Sharp Center provides space for private study, computer labs, supplemental instruction classrooms and private conferencing areas for tutoring and mentoring appointments.
Â
Note: For reporting purposes, the sport of track and field was combined into two teams based on gender, using rosters from indoor, outdoor and cross country seasons.
