Texas Tech men and women took second at the TTU Open Saturday morning
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Red Raider cross-country team opened the season with some strong individual performances as both the men and the women finished in second at the TTU Open.
"Overall, I'm proud of the effort by both teams," said head coach Jon Murray. "Everyone did as well as they could in this race and we have a good idea of what they can do to improve both personally and as a team. It will be nice to get back to training these next two weeks."
Texas Tech sophomore Edward Rush won the men's 4-mile with a time of 19:38.6 picking up a point for the men on the way to a runner-up finish with 76 points, just edging out UTEP.
Other notable performances came from Walker Hendricks with a time of 20:29.4 for a top 15 finish. Luke Estes (20:31.10) and Owen Likins (20:34.2) rounded out the top 20 finishing 17th and 19th respectively.
"Great effort by EJ Rush," said Murray. "His race was controlled and comfortable. This team will continue to work and find the right mix for success. There were a few who ran well and a few who did not run as well as expected but as we get them all together, the results will improve. It was nice to see Walker Hendricks racing again. He had a difficult time last year dealing with illness and has come back with strong determination."
A pair of Red Raider women finished in the top 10 of the 5K with Jazmyn Martinez leading the way with a time of 18:51.2 for a sixth-place result. Just behind her in seventh was Halena Rahmaan who finished in 19:03.6 to pick up seven points for the women who came in second overall with 61 points.
Sharon Chumo and Binta Ka picked up top 15 finishes for the women. Chumo crossed the line at 19:21.9 for a 13thplace finish and Ka finished just behind her with a time of 19:25.9 at 14th. Kyra Young finished just outside the top 20 with a time of 19:50.2 (a PR for her on the course).
"This is a good starting point for the ladies," said Murray. "Jazmyn did a good job leading the group. Two big improvements for the group were Sharon Chumo and Kyra Young. Both showed significant improvements from last year."
Next up for the Red Raiders is the Cowboy Jamboree on Sept. 18 in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
