August 26, 2016 | Men's Tennis
The Red Raiders will take the courts at the McLeod Tennis Center nine times in 2017 and meet last season’s NCAA Runner-Up Oklahoma on April 9.
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech men's tennis team released its 2016-17 schedule highlighted by 12 dual matches versus fellow 2016 NCAA Tournament squads announced Friday by head coach Brett Masi.
The Red Raiders piled up a program single-season record 28 wins, secured the program's highest final ITA ranking at No. 11 and clinched a share of the program's first Big 12 regular season championship under Masi in 2016.
Texas Tech will square off with 12 opponents who ranked inside the ITA's Top 40 final rankings from last season. The Red Raiders also will meet eight teams who won at least one match during the 2016 NCAA Tournament with NCAA Runner-Up Oklahoma visiting the McLeod Tennis Center on April 9. Tech won 14 of its 15 home matches during Masi's first season.
"I'm looking forward to the competition our team will face this season," Masi said. "We have a lot of challenges ahead of us, and I believe our squad will be ready. We play a number of great fall events for the players to compete in to get ready for the spring season and hopefully boost their individual rankings. The philosophy behind our spring schedule is to put our team in as many tough situations as we can so they'll be battle tested come Big 12 season and the NCAA's. There are a number of matches against Top 20 programs and NCAA Tournament teams from last season. We will have to make the most of our opportunities if we want to compare ourselves to what we were able to accomplish last season."
The Red Raiders are slated to play in the Midland Invitational (Sept. 16-18), the Cajun Fall Classic hosted by Louisiana-Lafayette (Sept. 22-25) and the Bulldog Fall Classic hosted by Georgia (Sept. 23-25) during the fall season.
Texas Tech will compete at the Saint Francis/ITA All-American Championships (Oct. 1-10) in Oklahoma and the ITA Texas Regionals (Oct. 21-24) hosted by TCU as part of the fall season. The singles and doubles championships from the ITA Texas Regionals will advance to the ITA National Indoors (Nov. 3-6) at the USTA National Tennis Center in New York.
The Red Raiders make their home debut and welcome Florida State, Mississippi State and Iowa for the ITA Kickoff Weekend (Jan. 28-29). The winner of the four-team pod will lock up a spot at the ITA National Indoor Championships (Feb. 17-20) hosted by Virginia. Texas Tech is looking to make its second straight trip to the 16-team event.
Tech's nonconference home schedule includes matches against UTSA (Feb. 10), Abilene Christian (Feb. 10), Indiana (March 15) and Memphis (March 24).
The Red Raiders travel to UCF (Jan. 14), Alabama (Feb. 3), Vanderbilt (Feb. 5), Texas A&M (Feb. 12), Illinois (March 3), Northwestern (March 5) and Tulsa (March 31) along with neutral site matchups versus Arizona (Jan. 13) and New Mexico (Jan. 14) during nonconference play.
Texas Tech will participate in the highly-touted Blue Gray National Tennis Classic (Feb. 24-26) in Montgomery, Alabama. The 8-team event features Alabama, Auburn, Boise State, Princeton, Rice, South Carolina and Virginia Tech.
The Red Raiders five-match Big 12 schedule has home dates with Oklahoma State (April 7), defending NCAA Runner-Up Oklahoma (April 9) and Baylor (April 22) coupled with road tilts at defending Big 12 co-champion TCU (April 13) and Texas (April 15). The Big 12 Championships will be hosted by Oklahoma from April 28-30.
Texas Tech is scheduled to return the bottom four members of its singles lineup fueled by Jolan Cailleau and Alex Sendegeya, a pair of 2016 All-Big 12 Second-Team selections. Cailleau, Sendegeya along with Bjorn Thomson and Connor Curry combined for 78 of the team's 112 singles wins in dual matches.
