AMES, Iowa -- Texas Tech volleyball dropped its first Big 12 road match of the season at Iowa State, 3-0, on Saturday, Sept. 26, at Hilton Coliseum.
The Cyclones won in straight-sets: 25-19, 28-26 and 25-18.
Junior Lauren Douglass tallied the team-high in kills with 11, the eighth time this season she's put up double digit marks and the second in as many matches. She fired off a final clip of .391 on Saturday.
The Red Raiders opened with a 5-0 run in the first to gain a 5-2 lead. However, Iowa State answered back to re-take an 8-7 advantage that they would keep the rest of the set. Tech would tie it at 14, but after the media timeout, the Cyclones controlled their way to a 25-19 win. Tech had two challenges go in their favor in the first frame: a net call that was challenged by Iowa State and would stand and a non-touch call by the Cyclones that would be reversed by a Flora challenge. Douglass and Keenan each put up four kills in the first frame, as Tech would record 11 overall.
Iowa State held a 12-7 lead halfway through the second set, until a Tech timeout changed the tides and the lead as the Red Raiders would rattle off seven of the next eight and five in-a-row to make it 14-13. The Red Raiders hold their advantage until late when the Cyclones rallied to tie the frame at 23 and send it to overtime. Iowa State would push ahead and claim a 28-26 second set victory. The Red Raiders put up 13 kills, as junior Marguerite Grubb picked up eight assists in each of the first two sets. Senior Carlie Foust recorded 10 of Tech's 23 digs in second.
The Red Raiders pulled an early deficit in the third to a one-point lead twice before reaching the media timeout down 13-15. A run by the Cyclones after the short break gave them enough cushion to close out a 25-18 final set. Douglass added half of Tech's 12 kills in the third set.
Foust finished with 22 digs, while sophomore Ashley Morgan totaled 10 digs, the third time this season she's had double-digit digs. The Red Raiders put up 55 digs on Saturday, the 13th time they've recorded more than their opponent in 16 matches.
Texas Tech returns to the road for a match with Baylor on Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 7 p.m. in Waco, Texas.
