ANNAPOLIS, Maryland -- Texas Tech volleyball capped off the Kristen Dickmann Invitational by picking up a 3-1 victory over George Washington on Saturday night at Wesley A. Brown Field House.
The Red Raiders (8-2) finished the tournament with a 2-1 record, with Lauren Douglass and Meghan Stacy garnering All-Tournament Team accolades.
Tech and the Colonials (6-4) battled to extras in the first set, with the Red Raiders claiming a 30-28 win. George Washington evened the score by grabbing a 25-22 set two victory, but Tech responded with two strong final frames to close it out, winning 25-16 in the third and 25-13 in the fourth.
"Having a complete team effort and getting contributions from numerous people today means a lot to this team," head coach Don Flora said. "This was a good sign of growing each match across the board."
Douglass and Victoria Hinneburg traded off carrying the team-lead in kills throughout the match, but both would finish with 16, a career-high for Hinneburg. The duo accounted for 32 of the team's 58 kills, with seven Red Raiders tallying five or more kills in the match.
Marguerite Grubb notched her third double-double of the season thanks to a season-high 52 assists and 12 digs, to go along with her season-high five kills. Carlie Foust led the team in digs with 15, while Ashley Morgan almost reached double-digit figures with nine.
The first set was a battle that featured 12 tied scores and four lead changes. Facing set point, the Red Raiders got back-to-back kills from Douglass and Stacy to turn the tide in their favor and send it to extras. After a few more back-and-forth points and facing another set point at 27-28, the Colonials committed two errors and Stacy drove home the winning point to take set one, 30-28.
"Our staff was really stoked about our resiliency and focus late in set one," Flora said.
Tech played from behind until the middle of the second set, taking a 17-16 lead after back-to-back kills from Katy Keenan. However, the Colonials broke a tie at 19 with a 4-0 run to put enough distance between the two sides to take a 25-22 set two win. The Red Raiders put up 17 kills in the second set, scoring 15 in each of the other three sets.
Douglass flirted with perfection through the first two sets, going nine-for-nine on attack attempts. Even though she lost it in the third frame, she still finished with an attack percentage of .667 for the match, with no errors.
The third and fourth sets were all Texas Tech, who kept enough distance between themselves and George Washington to not allow a lead change or the score to become tied at any point after halftime. The fourth set was also a clean one on the attack with no errors and a hitting clip of .469. Overall, the Red Raiders would finish at .313.
"Having a mindset to finish strong was good to see out of our team in set four," Flora said.
The Red Raiders improved to 2-0 all-time against George Washington, a program that associate head coach Jojit Coronel led as head coach for 11 years.
Texas Tech will have one more road match to complete the away stretch at UTEP on Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 6:30 p.m.
