LUBBOCK, Texas -- Texas Tech volleyball (13-12, 2-9) dropped a tough four-set match to Baylor (15-9, 3-7), 3-1, on Wednesday night at the United Supermarkets Arena.
The Bears and the Red Raiders split the first two sets, 25-20 and 25-23, respectively, before Baylor closed out the final two frames, 25-14 and 25-18.
It was the first match since Sept. 23 that took more than three sets to finish, when the Red Raiders defeated Oklahoma, 3-2.
Junior Lauren Douglass notched her 10th match this season with double-digit kills, putting up 10 on Wednesday night. Her marks led the Red Raiders for the 11th time this season in the category. She was also efficient with her swings, putting up a clip of .400, which raised her season average to .395.
Tech racked up 47 kills, with setters Morgan Reed (21) and Marguerite Grubb (14) assisting on 35 as a pair. Carlie Foust and Ashley Morgan topped the charts in digs, posting 17 and 16, respectively. With her figures, Foust is now 14 digs away from reaching the 10th best total in a single-season in program history.
The Red Raiders took an early 5-4 lead after playing even with the Bears early on in the first set. The frame would stay even until Baylor climbed ahead at 10-9. The Bears started to make a run, before being thwarted by the media timeout, which helped the Red Raiders add two to pull within 15-13. However, the Bears would use a pair of runs to build a 23-16 advantage, forcing Tech to use its final timeout of the frame. The short breaks were helpful to the Red Raiders, giving them a chance to regroup for a 3-0 run of their own to cut it to 23-19, but the Bears would claim two of the next three points to take set one, 25-20.
Douglass put up three kills for the Red Raiders in the first frame, with Sarah Redding, Katy Keenan and Meghan Stacy all earning two each. Reed (5) and Grubb (4) assisted on nine of Tech's 10 kills. On the other side of the ball, Victoria Hinneburg racked up three blocks, one solo, in set one.
Tech mirrored the start to the first set by holding a 5-4 lead at the beginning of set two. The Red Raiders broke it open behind a 3-0 run featuring kills from Douglass and Stacy, followed by a combined block by Douglass & Redding. Tech used the momentum to carry their advantage to 11-7, but a timeout helped Baylor climb back and knot it up at 15. Another 3-0 swing by Tech helped the Red Raiders take an 18-15 lead, building their way to 21-18 late in the frame, but once again, the Bears clawed their way back into it to tie it at 23. A sneaky kill from Reed, followed by a set point swing by Douglass helped close out set two for Tech, 25-23.
The Red Raiders connected for 17 kills and a clip of .325 in the second set. At the half, Redding led the team in kills with seven, putting up five during the second game. Reed and Grubb each dished out 11 assists, combining for 13. Tech also racked up more digs in the frame two, with 18 overall, in comparison to Baylor's 10, a complete reverse of the first set.
Baylor broke open the third set with a 7-3 advantage, but the Red Raiders stayed close after back-to-back errors by the Baylor offense to make it 8-6. The Bears pushed their advantage to 18-6 after a 10-0 run, forcing Tech to use both timeouts in attempt to regain control. The Red Raiders continued to fight, battling back to stave off set point four times in set three, thanks to kills from Redding and Grubb, but would fall, 25-14.
After three, Redding continued to lead the Red Raiders in kills with nine overall. Tech stayed even in the category leaders of assists and digs, with Reed & Grubb (14) and Foust & Morgan (13) at the top of the charts, respectively.
The Red Raiders jumped out to an early 3-1 lead in fourth frame, before busting out a 4-0 run to build their lead to 10-5 thanks to kills from Reed and Grant. Baylor responded out of a timeout with back-to-back points, before being halted by another kill from Grant at 11-7. The Bears used a pair of 4-0 runs to break the tie and take over the lead at 15-12. Tech stayed within two-points of the Bears until Baylor pushed ahead to a 21-17 advantage. The Bears would record four of the last five points to seal the victory, 25-20.
Up next for the Red Raiders is a trip to Manhattan, Kansas, for a match against Kansas State on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m. on ESPN3.
