LUBBOCK, Texas -- A couple of late runs were the difference as the Texas Tech volleyball team fell, 3-1, to the Kansas Jayhawks on Saturday, at the United Supermarkets Arena.
Texas Tech (15-9, 3-9) got out to a great start, hitting over .300 in the first, on their way to a 25-22 win. Kansas (18-7, 6-5) struck back in the second set, taking a 25-18 win.
In the third set, the teams went back and forth, leading to Kansas holding a 20-19 lead. From there the Jayhawks rattled off five-straight points to win, 25-19. Tech jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the fourth, but immediately allowed KU to go on a 4-0 run to tie it. The teams battled to a 20-20 tie before Kansas went on a 4-0 run, on its way to a 25-21 win to close out the match.
"Set two really changed the momentum," Texas Tech head coach Don Flora said. "They didn't even play that cleanly in that set. It had a lot to do with what we didn't do. We've been working hard at executing and taking care of our side of the net and we felt like we had momentum. From there, I think we kind of took a deep breath and you can't do that. You have to kick a team when you have them down. We just didn't get that done in set two."
Breeann David had a huge day on the offensive end for Tech, launching a team-high 17 kills while only committing five errors. She was joined in the double digits by Lauren Douglass, who finished with 12. Tech had 48 kills as a team, but struggled with its accuracy, posting a hitting percentage of .119.
"Breeann David can be great," Flora said. "We need her to be great a lot, and she was special tonight. She took some really big swings from the back row, put some early pressure on Kansas with the jump serve and got some big blocks. [Kansas] had to pull its All-American right side because Bree was making her life miserable. When you block people, it makes them think twice about what they're doing. "
Emily Ruetter recorded her third double-double in four matches, recording 40 assists and 13 digs. She now has 21 double-doubles as a Red Raider.
Defensively, Tech allowed Kansas to strike for 56 kills and hit .217. Tiana Dockery had a huge night to lead Kansas, firing 20 kills and hitting .319. Sara McClinton added 16 kills of her own, hitting .353. Tech had eight total team blocks and 63 digs, led by 16 from Rachel Brummitt. Brummitt is now 12 digs away from becoming Tech's all-time leader.
There were 854 fans in attendance for today's annual "Dig Pink" match, supporting breast cancer awareness. United Supermarkets agreed to donate $1 for each fan in attendance.
Tech will have Wednesday off, not returning to action until Nov. 15, when the Red Raiders travel to Morgantown, W. Va., to take on West Virginia.
