ABILENE, Texas -Abilene Christian scored just its second victory all-time over Texas Tech Tuesday night as the Wildcats downed the Red Raiders, 3-1 (25-11, 13-25, 25-18, 26-24), in front of a school-record 1,310 fans at Moody Coliseum.
In a series that is being renewed for the first time since 1983 this season, ACU (3-2) delivered a quick opening set victory and then withstood a Tech (5-5) rally in the second to win the final two frames.
The loss snapped a 24-match winning streak for the Red Raiders over ACU, whose only previous victory in the series came on Oct. 30, 1975, in Lubbock. Tech defeated ACU in straight sets just a week ago in Lubbock.
"Abilene Christian played solid and clean volleyball from the starting whistle," head coach Don Flora said. "We give them a ton of credit. This team will learn and grow from this type of environment. ACU's crowd was loud and made an impact on the match."
Jennifer Loerch led the ACU attack with a match-high 16 kills while also recording 14 digs for one of two double-doubles for the Wildcats, joining setter Sarah Siemens, who totaled 35 assists and 13 digs.
Errors got in Tech's way throughout the match as the Red Raiders totaled 24 overall, nine of which that came off ACU blocks, before finishing with a .129 hitting percentage. Tech also totaled 11 service errors as well.
Meghan Stacy powered the Red Raider attack with a team-high 11 kills followed by Aubree Piper with 10 and Katie Daffer and Mikia Millswith six each. Tech used the majority of its bench as 12 total Red Raiders recorded at least one kill.
Rachel Brummitt had a team-high 20 digs from the back row, her fourth 20-dig performance this year and the 12th of her career. Ellen Sorrells also delivered 10 digs while Emily Ruetterposted seven to go along with her 30 assists after coming off the bench in the second set.
ACU led Tech in digs, 86-60, as the Wildcats had five players finish in double figures for the category, led by Madison Hoover's match-high 22.
The Red Raiders return to the United Spirit Arena this weekend for the Lone Star Showdown where Tech will face Montana, Nevada and Cal State Fullerton over two days. Tech and Montana kick off the action at 10:30 a.m. Friday morning.
