Red Raiders Fall to Seattle in Season Opener

OGDEN, Utah - The 2013 volleyball season got off to a rocky start Friday morning as Seattle topped Texas Tech, 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-22), in the Wildcat Invitational opener at Swanson Gymnasium.
Between eight service errors as well as 20 hitting errors, Tech struggled with control against the Redhawks, who hit. 237 in the opening frame before coming back with a match-high .321 percentage in the second set to put the Red Raiders in an early hole.
The Red Raiders had a chance to extend the match in the third set with a 13-8 lead midway through the frame. Seattle recovered, however, to win six of the final nine points as Tech hit .069 in the final set alone, its lowest percentage in the match.
Martina Samadan powered the Seattle attack with a match-high 12 kills and .455 hitting percentage on the outside while Allison Farley chipped in nine kills to go along with a match-high four blocks. Seattle wrapped the match hitting .242 as a team, nearly 100 points higher than Tech's .143 average.
Breeann David powered the Red Raiders offensively with a team-high 11 kills as she went 11-for-21 with just two errors for a .429 hitting percentage, her highest in match since hitting a career-high .500 in 2011 against UConn, just her second match into her freshman year.
Meghan Stacy chipped in nine kills for Tech while Aubree Piper, Mikia Mills and Courtney Ensch added four as well. Ensch hit .375 in her collegiate debut as she went 4-for-8 on the attack with just one error.
Tech led the Redhawks in digs, 38-35, behind Rachel Brummitt's match-high 16. Stacy added seven digs as well while setter Emily Ruetter dished out a team-high 23 assists as Tech head coach Don Flora used all three setters in the match with both Nicole Hragyil and Marguerite Grubb seeing action.
The loss dropped Tech to 29-13 all-time in season openers and 1-2 under Flora. The Red Raiders came into the match looking to win their season opener in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2002-04 campaigns.
The Red Raiders continue the Wildcat Invitational later this afternoon, facing UC Riverside in a 5 p.m. CT first serve.
