West Virginia Rallies to Defeat Texas Tech, 3-1

LUBBOCK, Texas - Jordan Anderson connected on a match-high 18 kills to help West Virginia overcome an early first-set loss and defeat Texas Tech, 3-1 (24-26, 25-20, 25-19, 25-19), Saturday afternoon at the United Spirit Arena.
The Mountaineers, who hit only .158 as a team in the opening set, closed the match with a .242 hitting percentage after totaling 59 kills, 47 of which that came in the final three sets.
Tech, on the other hand, capitalized early with 15 kills and a .220 attacking percentage in the first set but failed to hit over .200 the rest of the way as the Red Raiders finished with 22 attacking errors to go along with nine service errors.
The loss marked Tech's third straight and first ever to West Virginia, dropping the Red Raiders to 7-11 overall and 0-3 in Big 12 play. The Mountaineers, meanwhile, improved to 15-2 on the season and 2-1 in league play.
Anderson was one of three Mountaineers to finish in double figures, joining Hannah Sackett and Nikki Attea, who connected on 15 and 11 kills each. Brittany Sample led the balanced attack with 44 assists to go along with 19 assists.
West Virginia led the battle for digs with an 80-70 advantage that was boosted by Anna Panagiotakopoulos' 24 from the libero position. Anderson and Attea also added 16 and 11 digs each to record double-doubles as well.
The Red Raiders were powered offensively by Jenna Allen, who, in her third match back from injury, connected on 17 kills off 51 attempts. She also totaled 12 digs for her second double-double already this season.
Allen was the only player among Tech's regular attackers who hit over .200 in the match. Aubree Piper also recorded nine kills for the Red Raiders while Breeann David added eight from the outside as well.
Emily Ruetter posted Tech's other double-double performance as the sophomore dished out 33 assists to go along with 16 digs. It was the sixth double-double of the season for Ruetter and the 12th of her young career.
Rachel Brummitt led the Red Raiders with 20 digs from the back row. She has now finished with 20 or more digs in nine different matches this year and remains well on pace to break her Tech single-season record from a year ago.
The Red Raiders came into the match 4-0 all-time against the Mountaineers after sweeping the season series a year ago. The two teams will meet again on Nov. 2 in Morgantown.
Tech returns to the road week for a pair of in-state battles, beginning Wednesday evening with a 6 p.m. first serve at No. 4 Texas. The Red Raiders close the week at TCU next Saturday.
