K-State Powers Past Texas Tech in Straight Sets

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Kaitlynn Pelger connected on a match-high 15 kills Saturday night to boost a Kansas State attack that hit .266 overall in a 3-0 sweep (25-19, 25-19, 25-22) of Texas Tech at Ahearn Field House.
Pelger hit .406 individually with just two errors off 32 attacks for the Wildcats, who improved to 14-5 overall and 2-4 in Big 12 play with the victory while also snapping a two-match losing skid.
The Red Raiders, meanwhile, struggled with attacking errors throughout the night, totaling 19 en route to dropping to 8-14 on the season and 1-5 in league action. Tech ended the contest hitting just .175 as a team.
"This was a great Big 12 match," Tech head coach Don Flora said. "Give Kansas State credit. They converted some quality digs into points in crunch time. We need to score and record a higher percentage when we make some great digs. It is also imperative that we stay focused in our game-time adjustments. These are some things we can continue to get better at each day and each match."
Jenna Allen and Meghan Stacy led the Tech attack with 10 kills each while Mikia Mills and Aubree Piper added seven apiece in the middle. Stacy was Tech's most accurate attacker with a .450 hitting percentage that featured just one error off 20 swings.
Tech had trouble stopping the K-State attack that not only featured Pelger but also had Dakota Kaufman with 10 kills and a .450 hitting percentage as well as Courtney Traxson with nine kills.
The Red Raiders totaled just 44 digs in the match, 11 of which that came from setter Emily Ruetter, who finished with her team-leading eighth double-double of the season as she also dished out 32 assists.
K-State combined for 51 digs on the night with Gina Madonia leading the Wildcats with 11 while Tristan McCarty added 10 of her own. The Wildcats also controlled an 8-5.5 advantage in blocks as well.
Allen came close to recording the only other double-double in the match as she posted nine digs along the back row while libero Rachel Brummitt totaled seven.
The Red Raiders return to the United Spirit Arena next week for a pair of matches, beginning Wednesday when Tech steps out of conference play to host New Mexico in a 6 p.m. first serve.
