CHESNUT HILL, Mass. - Texas Tech completed a perfect first day at the Boston College Invitational Friday afternoon with a 3-0 sweep (25-22, 25-18, 25-20) of Binghamton at Power Gym.
The Red Raiders (2-0), who defeated Fordham earlier in the day, had not previously won their first two matches in a season since 2008 when Tech swept through three matches at the Mean Green Classic hosted by North Texas.
"It's always good to start off the season with a 2-0 record," Tech head coach Don Flora said. "For us, we are still in the process of doing things right and competing at a high level. We want to be positive but we also know we have a lot of work to do to get ready for what we are really capable of."
After being forced into four sets earlier in the day, the Red Raiders survived a back-and-forth first set before gaining suitable leads midway through the second and third frames to put the match away.
The Red Raiders frustrated the Bearcat defense with a .363 hitting percentage that was Tech's highest since sweeping Connecticut on Aug. 27, 2011, which was also the second match of that season.
Breeann David posted a team-high 11 kills to lead the Red Raiders. She was assisted by Aubree Piper, who added nine kills from the middle and hit a career-high .643 in the match after going 9-for-13 in attempts with no errors.
Emily Ruetter earned the start at setter for the second-straight match as she finished with 25 assists and four digs. Flora turned to a 6-2 rotation late in the second frame, inserting Tori Jobe, who finished with six assists and five digs.
On the back row, Rachel Brummitt recorded a career performance as the sophomore transfer posted 24 digs, matching the Tech school record for most in a three-set match. The record was previously set by Sheila Solomon against Houston on Nov. 16, 1990.
Brummitt's defense helped the Red Raiders hold Binghamton to a .207 hitting percentage. Iva Partaleva led all players with 13 kills for the Bearcats, who also picked up eight and seven kills each from Kristin Hovie and Grace Vickers as well.
The Red Raiders continue the Boston College Invitational on Saturday morning, facing Siena at 9 a.m. CT before closing the tournament against the host Eagles at 6 p.m.
