EDINBURG, Texas - Texas Tech overcame a slow start to extend its winning streak to six-straight Tuesday night as the Red Raiders topped Texas-Pan American, 3-0 (27-25, 25-11, 25-21), at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
The win, Tech's (6-1) sixth in a row, did not come easy as the Broncs (1-7) took a suitable lead to begin the opening set, only for the Red Raiders to rally back by winning nine of the frame's final 10 points.
The Red Raiders cruised from there, using a 10-2 run to close the second set and a 5-0 run late in the final frame to close the match.
"The journey takes a lot of different steps and learning comes in a lot of different ways," Tech head coach Don Flora said following the match. "Tonight this program learned about ourselves and how to set our own standards. It was nice to get a win in a nice volleyball environment."
Amanda Dowdy was one of three Tech players with nine kills in the match, joining Miara Cave and Breeann David. The Red Raiders finished the mach hitting .213 as a team with David leading the group with a .333 average.
The Tech defense held the Broncs to a .030 hitting percentage as Ijanae Holman led UTPA with eight kills while Maria Kliefoth added seven of her own.
Tory Vaughan led all players with 11 digs, while reigning Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week, Aubree Piper, posted a match-high four blocks.
Tech used all three of its setters in the match as the Red Raiders briefly went to a 6-2 rotation midway through the second set. Karlyn Meyers led the group with 27 assists and a pair of kills.
The match was the first of eight-straight on the road for Tech as the Red Raiders head to Ruston, La. this weekend for the Louisiana Tech Tournament.
Tech will face Southeastern Louisiana and Grambling State on Friday and then close the tournament against the host Lady Techsters on Saturday.
