DENTON, Texas - Amanda Dowdy dropped a match-high 18 kills to help Texas Tech overcome an early deficit and defeat North Texas, 3-1 (19-25, 25-15, 25-14, 25-21), Monday night at the Mean Green Volleyball Center.
For the first time since the season opener at TCU, Tech (13-1) dropped the opening set, but this time was able to come-from-behind to claim the win as the Red Raiders struggled on the attack early, allowing the Mean Green (9-6) to take a one-set lead.
Even with the early deficit, Tech rallied to win the next three frames, extending its winning streak to 13-straight in the process, which hopefully should provide some momentum heading into the conference opener this weekend.
"Early on our distribution was very balanced and good, but Amanda was playing at such a high level that I told Karlyn (Meyers) to start going her way more," Tech head coach Don Flora said. "We faced some adversity tonight, but I was proud of how this team battled back and took charge. That will be a trait we will need once Big 12 play begins."
After the Red Raiders dropped the opening set, Dowdy helped take over the match as the senior notched nine kills in the fourth set alone en route to a season-high .457 hitting percentage.
In addition to her work on the attack, Dowdy also added a team-high 12 digs for her 11th double-double of the season and 24th one of her career. It marked Dowdy's sixth-straight double-double dating back to the opening of the Louisiana Tech Invitational.
Tech hit only .100 during the opening frame thanks to six attacking errors. The Red Raiders recovered, though, to record only nine errors the rest of the match to finish with a .314 hitting percentage.
While Tech's hitting improved following the opening set, so did its blocking. The Red Raiders failed to record a single block during the opening frame before ending with a 9-4 advantage in the category.
Miara Cave led the way with five blocks while Aubree Piper and Mikia Mills added four each as well.
Piper also played a big part on the offensive end, posting 10 kills, while Cave chipped in eight and Breeann David added six of her own.
Tory Vaughan and Karlyn Meyers recorded nine digs each to help boost Tech's back row. Meyers came close to posting a double-double of her own as she finished with 36 assists and five kills.
Eboni Godfrey led North Texas with 14 kills while Courtney Windham posted 11 of her own. The Mean Green opened the match hitting .367 over the first set before ending the match with a .169 percentage.
The Red Raiders return to Lubbock this weekend to open Big 12 play against 16th-ranked Iowa State. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the United Spirit Arena.
