Texas Tech Open Race Highlights
LUBBOCK, Texas - The Red Raiders and No. 5 Lady Raiders cross country teams overpowered the fields at the Texas Tech Open held at the Meadowbrook Golf Course Friday evening, as the women put six in the top 10 and the men placed four in the top 10.
"It was a great team effort and there were some good times ran out on the course today," head coach Jon Murray said after the meet. "It is going to be a very competitive group on both sides men and women and it was a great start to win our home meet."
The No.5 Lady Raiders were again led by Rose Tanui. She paced the field with a time of 17:15.65 to win the race. Caroline Jepleting was runner-up after crossing the line in 17:21.18. Twin sisters Caroline and Winrose Karunde placed third and fourth, respectively. C. Karunde finished with a 17:24.21 and W. Karunde ran a 17:27.52.
Purity Biwott came in fifth running an 18:12.14, while teammate Michelle Guzman placed sixth with a 18:39.74. Other Lady Raiders ran strong as well. Kaci Westervelt (13th) ran a 19:30.37 while teammates Katherine Priebe (19:38.21) and Meagan Willingham (20:10.12) placed 14th and 15th, respectively. Chelsea Scott finished right behind in 16th with a time of 20:12.05.
It marks the second-straight race the women's team has finished first through sixth and had a perfect score.
The men's team ran behind four runners in the top 10. Silas Kemboi and Gilbert Limo lead the way for the Red Raiders in second and third. Kemboi ran the course in a 24:20.34 while Limo covered it in 24:50.43.
Nathan Milles had a strong showing in eighth. He ran a 25:30.71 over the 8K. Samuel Bushong was the next Red Raider to cross the line. He placed 10th in 25:47.78.
Valentino Julien placed in 12th with a time of 26:01.52 while Reid Strong (26:15.46) and Zack Dawson (26:17.27) finished in 17th and 18th, respectively.
The men finished with a total of 25 points to beat the field by 37 points.
