LUBBOCK, Texas - With arguably one of his best recruiting classes during his tenure at Texas Tech, men's golf coach Greg Sands announced the additions of four highly-touted newcomers that have signed National Letters of Intent during the fall signing period.
Donning the scarlet and black, Clement Sordet, Esteban Restrepo, Henry Todd and Nathan Weant will join the Red Raider golf team beginning in the fall of 2011.
"This is by far probably the best recruiting class, as far as junior golfers go, that we have had since I have been here," Sands explained. "Because we are losing three players, it was really important we have a great class and I feel we've done that. Each guy brings big strength and a competitive game to the course. I could not be more pleased with this year's signing class."
Headlining the stellar class, French native Sordet comes to Tech as one of the top junior golfers in the world. The newcomer enjoyed a successful 2009 campaign capped off by a third-place finish in the 2009 European Amateur Championship, a tournament featuring collegiate players combined with junior golfers. Sordet, a member of the French national team, was also named the 2009 French Stroke champion following a 13-under par performance.
Joining Sordet, Esteban Restrepo is no stranger to success. Coming in as one of the top players in South America, Restrepo entertained a decorated 2010 season as well. The Colombian native finished eighth at the 2010 Junior World Golf Championship before claiming the Colombian Junior National Championship and finishing in the top 10 at the South American Amateur Championship to round out the season.
Rounding out the 2011-2012 class, Sands inked two fellow Texans in Todd and Weant.
Weant, a two-time district champion for Hallsville High School, chose Texas Tech over conference foes Texas A&M and Kansas while Todd, the first commit of the talented class, found himself atop state rankings throughout his career at Northwest High School in Fort Worth, Texas.
"All four of these guys are winners at all levels on the golf course and, in turn, no strangers to success," Sands said. "These are intangible qualities a coach dreams of in a player and most definitely qualities which will only better us as a team."
