LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech displayed one of its better defensive performances of the season, but even that was not enough to stop No. 5 Nebraska on Saturday as the Huskers swept the Red Raiders, 3-0 (25-10, 25-18, 25-20), in the United Spirit Arena.
After the Huskers (22-2; 14-1) opened with a decisive first-set victory, Tech (3-21, 1-14) closed the margin in the final two frames, forcing a tie midway through the second set while taking the lead twice in the final set.
"We have talked all year about little victories, and I think we definitely took a few today," interim head coach Beth Falls said. "Nebraska is ranked No. 5 in the nation for a reason, so for us to stay with them for most of the last two sets says a lot about the way our team competed today. I am proud of our team, but we have to remember that we play to win and hopefully we bring that mentality again to Missouri next week."
Backed by an improved defense, the Red Raiders held the Huskers to a .147 hitting percentage over the final two sets, but Tech could not contain its errors, either, as the two teams had 15 attacking miscues each during the final two frames.
The Huskers finished the match with a .240 hitting percentage after opening the match with a .520 percentage off 15 kills and only two errors. Nebraska's final hitting percentage was its lowest against Tech in over 10 years as it posted a .169 percentage on Sept. 24, 1999, in a 3-1 victory in Lubbock.
Amanda Dowdy tied for the match-high in kills with nine, while Justine Young and Miara Cave added seven and six kills each. Cave finished the match hitting a team-best .333 off 12 attempts.
Karlyn Meyers recorded a match-high 24 assists, while Candice Neill boosted the back row with 10 digs. Jackie Vincent and Tory Vaughan added six digs each.
After a brief stint at home, the Red Raiders return to the road this Wednesday in Columbia, Mo. to face the Missouri Tigers at 6:30 p.m. Tech's next home match is next Saturday (Nov. 13) against in-state rival Texas at 1 p.m.
