LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech had seven volleyball student-athletes named to an Academic All-Big 12 team Tuesday, as part of the annual announcement from the conference office.
Among the 51 conference student-athletes nominated, seniors Caroline Courtney (Honors Arts and Letters) and Alexxa Roberts (Human Development and Family Studies), juniors Amanda Dowdy (Exercise and Sport Sciences) and Karlyn Meyers (Exercise and Sport Sciences), and sophomores Tory Vaughan (Restaurant, Hotel, and Institutional Management) and Aleah Hayes (Early Childhood Education) earned first team selection, while sophomore Miara Cave (Mass Communications) was honored on the second team.
The first team selection was the third in Courtney's career, while Dowdy and Meyers earned the honor for the second-straight year. Roberts, Vaughan, Hayes and Cave were all first-time selections.
"I am really proud of the accomplishments of this group," Tech interim head coach Beth Falls said. "One of the things we stress to our players is success in the classroom, and this group has really led by example."
Nominated by each institution's direction of student-athlete support services, the volleyball academic all-league squad consisted of 38 first-team members combined with 13 on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
