LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech pushed Texas to four sets, but the 7th-ranked Longhorns recovered from a second-set loss to defeat the Red Raiders, 3-1 (25-12, 22-25, 25-20, 25-16), Saturday in the United Spirit Arena.
Even after a momentum-building victory in the second, Tech (3-23; 1-16) could not build on 12 service errors by the Longhorns (19-5; 14-2) as Texas found a run at the end of each of the third and fourth sets to end the Red Raiders' shot at the come-from-behind victory.
"I was proud of the way we played today," Tech interim head coach Beth Falls said. "Texas is obviously a really good team, but we stayed with them for the most part which says a lot about the way the team competed today. We've talked about taking little victories for a while now, so I'm hoping this will be a momentum builder for us next week."
Following Texas' first-set victory, the Longhorns appeared to control the early part of the second set, but Tech overcame an early five-point deficit to tie the match at 16 points each. After both teams traded three-points runs for a 21-21 tie, Tech rallied to win four of the next five points to send the Red Raiders into the locker room with momentum on its side.
Texas shifted the match's momentum back in favor of the Longhorns following the intermission, though, opening with an early three-point lead that was eventually expanded to a 14-7 lead midway through the set.
Tech could not find an answer for Juliann Faucette as the senior recorded eight of her match-high 24 kills in the set, giving Texas a 2-1 lead it would not relinquish.
Unlike earlier in the match, Tech could not come from behind to tie the match as Tech created a four-point lead midway through the frame before ending the match on an 8-2 run behind a .423 hitting period during the final frame.
Amanda Dowdy came close to recording another double-double as the junior finished with a team-high 12 kills and nine digs. Aubree Piper and Miara Cave also ended with double-digit kills, adding 10 each as the duo provided a spark for the Tech offense.
Setter Karlyn Meyers added 31 assists for Tech and eight digs, while Jackie Vincent and Tory Vaughan each added eight and seven digs each. Both teams finished with four blocks.
Besides Faucette, Texas received double-digit kill performances by Jennifer Doris and Sha"Dare McNeal who both finished with 11 kills in the match.
The Red Raiders will take a week off before traveling to Colorado next Saturday to face the Buffaloes at 7:30 p.m. (CT) in Boulder.
