
Manzini Wins Opening ITA Qualifying Singles Match

LUBBOCK, TX - Texas Tech's Vitor Manzini continued his winning ways as he defeated his opening qualifying round opponent in the ITA D'Novo/ITA Men's Tennis All-American Championships Tournament in Tulsa.
A Prequalifying Singles entry, Manzini won each of his four earlier matches to gain a spot in Qualifying Singles, and he took complete advantage of his hard work by downing South Florida's Wael Kilani, 6-2, 6-1, on Monday afternoon.
Manzini squares off against N.C. State's Dominic Hodgson in the second round of qualifying singles at 9 a.m. on Tuesday. In qualifying singles, players must win three rounds to advance to Main Draw.
Coach Tim Siegel remarked, "I can't say enough about Vitor. He keeps getting stronger and stronger. He'll face another good opponent in his match on Tuesday."
After losing the first set and then winning the second set to even the match, the second Red Raider qualifying singles entry, Rafael Garcia, wasn't able to overcome Florida's Sekou Bangoura in the deciding third set and fell, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.
"Rafael lost a tight match to a very good player this afternoon. He played very well and continues to improve," noted coach Siegel.
Qualifying Doubles entries begin play on Tuesday afternoon and Texas Tech has two entries in the field of 64. Raony Carvalho and Vitor Manzini take on Cal Poly's Jordan Bridge and Brian McPhee at 1:00 p.m. The second Red Raider doubles entry, Gonzalo Escobar and Rafael Garcia, begin play at 3:30 p.m. against San Diego's Dean Jackson and Patrick Pohlmann.
In Qualifying Doubles, teams must win three rounds to advance to Main Draw.
The University of Tulsa hosts the tournament for the fourth-straight year and for the sixth year overall. The event takes place at Case Tennis Center on the University of Tulsa campus.
