Tech Lands Six on Big 12 All-Academic Team

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech had six players, of seven who were eligible, earn All Big 12 Academic team honors as announced by the Big 12 Conference office this week. Hayley Ball, Caroline Courtney, Amanda Dowdy, Jenn Goehry and Karlyn Meyers earned first-team honors, while Caroline Witte was named to the second squad.
There were 52 student-athletes named to the 2009 Academic All-Big 12 Volleyball Team, with Kansas and Oklahoma each with eight selections. Texas Tech followed with the next highest group to earn the academic award, with the six.
"I'm so proud of this group. Most of these players are in the core of their majors, with three seniors who will be graduating, and each brings such diligence to their approach to the classroom," Academic Advisor Michelle Brigham said. "These young women make all of us proud with their terrific accomplishments. They are a pleasure to work with."
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the volleyball academic all-league squad consisted of 43 first team members combined with nine on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
Among those honored, Katie Martincich (Kansas) and JuliAnne Chisholm (Kansas State) were nominated with a 4.00 grade point average as the only pair so distinguished.
