LUBBOCK, Texas - Coming into his first major as a professional, the goal for former Texas Tech All-American golfer Andrew Dresser was to make the "cut." Mission accomplished, as his two-over par 73 Friday put him at seven-over 149, which proved to be just enough to move him into the final two rounds of the U.S. Open Saturday and Sunday at the famed Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego, Calif.
If experience truly is a key to success, then Dresser has had his share of it during his first appearance on one of professional golf's premier stages. As was the case on day one, the Carrollton, Texas, native experienced his share of up-and-down holes, but his three-stroke improvement over the first day showed he is more than capable of standing tall on the professional circuit and holding his own amidst some of the biggest names in the sport. Dresser is currently tied for 65th amidst 156-player field that opened the event.
Day one saw Dresser play about as solid as one could hope through his first nine, coming in at one-under at the turn. The back nine were not quite as nice for the former Red Raider, as he encountered a number of challenging holes that eventually left him at five-over par for the day.
Teeing off day two on the same holes that plagued him in the first round, Dresser did not show any lingering effects early. A birdie on one mixed with several par holes helped him stay even through the first 11 holes. Despite encountering some unwanted bogies at the end, he finished the last two holes with a birdie and par, respectively, to finish the day at 73 and put him into the final two rounds of competition.
The top 60 scores and those players within 10 shots of the leader made the cut to move on.
Saturday's third round is scheduled to get underway shortly after 8 a.m. PST. Complete results can be found at www.usopen.com.
