TULSA, Okla. - The 13th-ranked Texas Tech doubles duo of Christian Rojmar and Bojan Szumanski came up short of a first round victory today, losing to Wake Forest's No. 7 team of Steven Forman and Cory Parr at the 2008 NCAA Doubles Championships in Tulsa, Okla. The loss not only put the cap on the 2008 tennis season, but also ended the legacy of senior Szumanski.
Rojmar and Szumanski went head-to-head with one of their toughest competitors this season as they played No. 7 Forman and Parr at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center at the University of Tulsa. Forman and Paar took the first set winning 7-5, but the Red Raider pair didn't go down without a fight as the two teams continued to play a close match through the second set. Rojmar and Szumanski led 4-1 in the second, but Forman and Paar battled back to take the second set tiebreaker and advance to the second round of play.
"Today Christian and Bojan played a very tough doubles match," said head coach Tim Siegel. "It was just very unfortunate because I think they are one of the top teams in the country, and they have proved that all year. Although they were unable to come up with the win today, they still have had an outstanding year leading the team in doubles."
Szumanski is undisputedly one of the top collegiate tennis players to come out of Tech to date. He not only had an impressive collegiate career as a tennis player, but he continues to garner recognition for his excellence off the court as he was named today to the CoSida ESPNThe Magazine Academic All-District VI team for the third time in his career. He will advance on to the national ballot, which will be released in the end of May, hoping to obtain his second Academic All-American honor.
Playing in the top spot for the Red Raiders for the past two seasons, Szumanski has positioned himself as Texas Tech's all-time winningest singles and doubles player. He ended his collegiate campaign with a 90-48 career singles record, and a career doubles record of 61-44. His resume includes a three-time All-Big 12 singles honoree, two-time All-Big 12 doubles with Rojmar, three-time Academic All-Big 12, 2005 Academic All-American, and three-time first team Academic All-District VI. In addition he is the only player in program history to have participated in the NCAA Team and Singles Championships three times.
