TULSA, Okla. - Texas Tech senior Bojan Szumanski played in his final collegiate singles tennis match today as he competed at the 2008 NCAA Singles Championships hosted by the University of Tulsa at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. After qualifying for the tournament for the third time in his career, Szumanski was unable to again reach the second round as he was upended by No. 22 Erling Tveit (Mississippi) in the first round, losing 6-4, 6-3.
Szumanski is one of the most decorated college tennis players to date, and will go down as Texas Tech's all-time winningest singles and doubles player. He ended his collegiate campaign ranked No. 33 nationally with a 90-48 career singles record, and currently holds a career doubles record of 61-43 heading into tomorrow's first-round of the NCAA Doubles Championship.
He is a three-time All-Big 12 singles honoree, two-time All-Big 12 doubles with Rojmar, three-time Academic All-Big 12, 2005 Academic All-American, and two-time first team Academic All-District VI. Also, he is the only player in program history to have participated in the NCAA Team and Singles Championships three times.
"I played really well, but unfortunately he (Tveit) was just too good today," said Szumanski after the loss. "It was a little disappointing to finish in first round in singles, but it isn't over because Christian and I are definitely ready and excited to compete tomorrow in doubles."
The 13th ranked team of Rojmar and Szumanski will compete in the NCAA Doubles Championships for the second straight year beginning tomorrow, May 22, at 2 p.m. The duo will face Wake Forest's No. 7 team of Steven Forman and Cory Parr. Forman and Parr are 15-8 in duals, 19-9 overall, which includes an impressive 8-5 win over the nation's top-ranked pair from Virginia, Treat Huey and Somdev Devvarman, at the conference championships.
