LUBBOCK, Texas - Coming off a ninth-place finish against many of the top teams in the country, the No. 22 Texas Tech men's golf team will tee off its second fall event Monday at the prestigious Shoal Creek Golf and Country Club in Birmingham, Ala.
Shoal Creek, a par 72 course designed by the legendary Jack Nicklaus, is an invitation-only private course that has played host to a number of PGA, USGA and NCAA events. The Red Raiders will be one of just12 teams competing at the two-day, three-round event hosted by the University of Alabama Birmingham Monday and Tuesday.
Tech will join No. 21 Auburn as the only Top 25 teams in the field. Also participating at the event will be such schools as Georgia Southern, LSU, Michigan State, Mississippi and Vanderbilt. Oklahoma will also be there to join the Red Raiders as the only Big 12 teams competing.
Tech coach Greg Sands' squad is coming off a solid showing at the Carpet Capital Collegiate in its first fall event last weekend in Rocky Face, Geo. The Red Raiders finished well ahead of top 10 programs Florida, No. 6, and Clemson, No. 7, while coming in just three strokes behind No. 4 Georgia. Sophomore Will Griffin was the Red Raiders' top performer with a one-under 215 to finish in sixth place.
Sands will count on a lineup of Griffin, juniors Garrett Merrell and Santiago Rivas, freshman Sergio Franky and sophomore Matt Smith to once again lead Tech to a strong showing.
The first two rounds of competition will tee off Monday, with the final round taking place on Tuesday. Live stats will be available at www.golfstat.com.
